HONOREE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF LYNCHBURG
- Began the Lynchburg men's soccer program in 1954 and led the Hornets for 34 seasons (1954-88)
- Record of 371-167-48 (.674 win percentage)
- Deemed "the winningest coach ever in college soccer" in a Sports Illustrated feature in 1978
- Recognized in 1991 by the Virginia General Assembly for his "Unparalleled Record of Achievement"
- Lynchburg's main field was named in his honor in 1990, and former LC students created the William H. Shellenberger Scholarship Fund in his honor that same year
- Was inducted into the Lynchburg Sports Hall of Fame in its introductory year in 1978
- Won 21 men's soccer conference championships: 10 ODAC championships, 3 Mason-Dixon championships, 8 Dixie championships. 10 appearances in the National Tournament
- Five-time ODAC Coach of the Year in men's soccer. VISA Men's Soccer Coach of the Year 1976
- Six-time ODAC Coach of the Year in men's golf, led team to six ODAC men's golf championships
