HONOREE FROM WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY
- Served Washington and Lee for more than 35 years as a coach, professor, and administrator
- Mentored 15 All-American as an assistant coach (off. coordinator, goalkeepers) for the men's lacrosse program over 10 years with two of his keepers earning C. Markland Kelley Awards as the outstanding goalkeepers in the nation
- Served as vice-president (1974-76) and president (1976-78) of the United States Lacrosse Coaches Association (USLCA)
- Also served as United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) president and was a nationally recognized referee
- Promoted to assistant athletic director in 1983 and continued that role -- as well as an assistant football coach -- until 1990
- Named director of physical education in 1991, promoted to senior assistant athletic director in 2002, and served as the school's interim athletic director for the 2006-07 school year
- Two-time All-American as an attackman, O'Connell is a member of the Denison University (Ohio), Ohio Lacrosse, and Maryland Lacrosse Club halls of fame
