General 1/10/2012 12:00:00 AM ODAC Hosts Special Olympics Celebration ODAC Hosts Special Olympics Celebration Sweet Briar the Venue for Year-End Event SWEET BRIAR, Va. --- Special Olympics Virginia (SOVA) and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) teamed up for an end-of-the-season volleyball celebration at Sweet Briar College in November. This event marked the first time all 13 ODAC schools partnered with SOVA to host a regional event. The day kicked off with each Special Olympic athlete being partnered with an ODAC SAAC member as “a buddy for the day.” ODAC SAAC members and Special Olympians then teamed up and competed in several volleyball games and skills sessions during the morning. The celebration concluded with a luncheon and an end-of-the-year banquet. During that time, ODAC SAAC members presented each Special Olympian with a certificate and a mini volleyball signed by the ODAC SAAC members. Special Olympics Virginia serves more than 10,000 athletes through seven regional offices and 29 area programs. SOVA is one of 52 U.S. programs, and part of a global movement that serves three million athletes in more than 180 countries. Click to go to the Special Olympics Virginia website. The ODAC’s coverage of the Commonwealth is just as expansive. Twelve of the conference’s 13 full-time members span from the southwestern corner of the state up to Harrisonburg and across to Virginia Beach. Shenandoah University will join as a full sport member in the 2012-13 academic year, further expanding the ODAC north into Winchester.
