Hampden-Sydney Tops ODAC Men's Basketball Preseason Poll

RMC Joins H-SC in Garnering First Place Recognition

FOREST, Va. --- For the first time since the 2003-04 season, Hampden-Sydney College reigns atop the ODAC Men's Basketball Preseason Poll following a survey of the league's head coaches.

The Tigers garnered 140 total points powered by eight first place votes. Defending ODAC champion Randolph-Macon College collected the remaining five top nods on the way to 135 markers.

Three additional ODAC schools cracked 100 total points with one just off that, creating a clear separation line between sixth and seventh place in the poll. Guilford College (122) rounded out the top-three, while Virginia Wesleyan University (104) and Washington and Lee University (102) account for the remaining squads over the century mark. Roanoke College (96) came up just a few tallies shy.

In the sections below, we look back to the 2022-23 season to set the tone for this year and then dive into some features of ODAC men's basketball for the upcoming 2023-24 campaign.

  • Coaching has always been a strong feature since the ODAC opened its doors for the 1976-77 season. Guilford's Tom Palombo and Virginia Wesleyan's Dave Macedo have combined to win 940 games in the men's ranks. Macedo owns a .728 winning percentage on the way to 469 victories, all guiding the Marlins program. Palombo has won 471 games as a men's mentor including 371 at Guilford. He also spent seven seasons as a women's coach at VWU and Defiance College, adding 141 more victories to his resumé.

Randolph-Macon's Josh Merkel has corralled five Bob Johnson Coach of the Year awards from his ODAC peers. He has won almost 81.5-percent (176-40) of his games since arriving in Ashland nine years ago. Roanoke's Clay Nunley and Lynchburg's Hilliary Scott have each won over 200 games.

In terms of milestones, Palombo (471) and Macedo (469) have outside shots at 500 career victories. Both Merkel and Nunley are sitting on 242 wins, giving them good chances to reach 250 victories this season. Hampden-Sydney's Caleb Kimbrough, the reigning Bob Johnson Coach of the Year, is 22 wins shy of reaching 100 for his career. Washington and Lee's Chris McHugh will reach 100 victories with the Generals' 10th win this year.
