ODAC Announces All-ODAC Women's Volleyball Awards

Marlins Earn Six Team Spots, Two Special Honors to Headline Awards

FOREST, Va. --- Virginia Wesleyan University saw six Marlins earn all-conference team spots in addition to a pair of special individual honors to headline the 2023 All-ODAC Women's Volleyball Awards as announced following the ODAC championship match Saturday morning in Ashland.

Randolph-Macon College star Grace Parker earned ODAC Player of the Year laurels for the second straight season. VWU mentor Karissa Cumberbatch secured ODAC Coach of the Year recognition from her peers, while Marlins opposite Abigail Mahoney was tabbed the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league's athletic communications personnel.

Bridgewater College outside Reagan Stoop rounded out the conference's four special individual awards as the ODAC Rookie of the Year.

Twenty-four players garner all-league honors in a vote of the ODAC's head coaches. Nine of this season's standouts appear on an all-conference team for at least a second straight season. That includes six of the eight members of the All-ODAC First Team.

RMC's Parker and VWU's Mahoney both appeared on the 2022 first team with Parker enjoying her third straight highest-team appointment. Marlins setter Haley Sutton is also now a three-time first team choice, while Averett University libero Erin Gray collected her second straight first team nod. Middles Megan Bost from Randolph-Macon and Emma Claytor from Virginia Wesleyan both made the leap to the first team from last year's All-ODAC Third Team.

Parker, a fifth year from Andover, N.J., is the most prolific attacker in ODAC women's volleyball history. Earlier this season, Parker became the ODAC's all-time leader in kills. That total stands at 1,871 following her 19 kills in RMC's 3-1 loss to Washington and Lee in the ODAC championship match on Saturday. Through the ODAC Tournament, Parker leads the ODAC in kills (504), kills per set (4.89), points (575.5), and points per set (5.59). She is tied for fourth in aces (49), 12th in digs (324), 15th in attack percentage (.227), and 16th in digs per set (3.15). Parker earned three ODAC Player of the Week awards and was named the AVCA Division III Player of the Week for her production the week of September 5-11. That week, she notched 32 kills in a 3-1 win over Susquehanna University, marking the most in any match in the ODAC this season.

Nationally, Parker entered the weekend ranked third in kills per set and points per set. She ranked fifth in total kills and total points. Her 32 kills against Susquehanna ranked as the third-most in a four-set match in Division III this season.

Cumberbatch enjoys her first ODAC top coaching honor in just her third season in charge of the Marlins women's volleyball program. Her teams have won 20 or more matches each season and earn the #1 in the ODAC Tournament in 2022 and 2023. VWU's 26-6 record this year features the program's second-most wins all-time trailing only the Marlins 2018 ODAC championship-winning squad (28-8). This year's team went 12-0 in league play and has posted a combined record of 32-3 in Cumberbatch's tenure. Cumberbatch owns a career record of 70-23 (.753).

Stoop, a first-year from Belhaven, N.C., was an instant success in her first season, leading Bridgewater's front line and becoming one of the best two-way outsides in the conference. Stoop is second in the ODAC in kills (447), kills per set (4.26), points (522.0) and points per set (4.97). She is tied for fourth in aces (49), ninth in digs (360), 10th in attack percentage (.260), and 12th in digs per set (3.43). Stoop earned four ODAC Player of the Week awards and was named the AVCA Division III Player of the Week for her production the week of October 9-15. She finished the season on a streak of 22 straight matches with double figures in kills and 26-of-29 matches for the season. Stoop notched 31 kills in a 3-2 win over Guilford marking the ODAC's highest kills output in a five-set match this season.

Mahoney, a graduate student from San Diego, Calif., stars both on and off the court for Virginia Wesleyan. In the classroom, Mahoney finished her bachelor's degree in international studies with a business influence with a 3.85 grade point average. She is currently pursuing an MBA at VWU. A member of the Batten Honors College, Mahoney works in the VWU President's office as a Presidential Associate in addition to serving as a Village Coordinator for residence life. She is the CEO of the Marlin Business Conference and has worked as a course coordinator for NATO and is part of Model UN. The multi-year honoree on the ODAC All-Academic Team has worked with "Morgan's Message" to help eliminate the stigma around mental health awareness, an initiative brought to VWU's campus by its SAAC, of which Mahoney is a member.

On the floor, Mahoney pairs this honor with a second straight All-ODAC First Team selection. Barring an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament, Mahoney closed VWU's season as both a prolific and efficient hitter. She is fifth in the ODAC in attack percentage (.293) and kills (312), sixth in kills per set (2.97), ninth in points (339.0), and 10th in points per set (3.23).
