ODAC Announces All-ODAC Football Awards

RMC's Campanale Repeats as Offensive POY, AU's Russell Named Defensive POY

FOREST, Va. --- Nationally eighth-ranked Randolph-Macon College saw 16 players receive all-conference team recognition plus special individual honors to highlight the 2023 All-ODAC Football Awards.

Yellow Jackets quarterback Drew Campanale is now a two-time winner of the J. Stokely Fulton Offensive Player of the Year award, while RMC mentor Pedro Arruza garnered his second straight ODAC Coach of the Year plaque. Averett University defensive end Jahlin Russell earned Lou Wacker Defensive Player of the Year laurels.

Washington and Lee University athletes accounted for the final two special awards. Generals running back Anthony Crawford was tabbed ODAC Rookie of the Year, while defensive end Peyton Pack was selected as the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league's athletic communications personnel.

Sixty-seven players earned All-ODAC recognition this season with 25 appearing on the all-conference lists for at least a second straight season. That includes 15 members of the All-ODAC First Team.

Offensively, Campanale and RMC teammates Nick Hale (RB), David Wallis (WR), and Nehemiah Nixon (OL) repeat on the first team. Fellow Yellow Jacket offensive linemen Matt Hale and Storm James moved up from the 2022 All-ODAC Second Team and All-ODAC Third Team, respectively. Hampden-Sydney College receiver Mason Cunningham, the 2022 ODAC Rookie of the Year, moved up from the second team along with Shenandoah offensive lineman David Munoz

On defense, the entire 2022 first team secondary repeats on the top team in 2023, with that group featuring Bridgewater College corner Aaron Moore, HSC safety Will Pickren, RMC safety Cade Jones, and Shenandoah University corner Keyshawn Wilder. Yellow Jackets defensive tackle Wade Grubbs also earned a first team position for a second straight season. BC linebacker Aaron Nice moved up from the second team, while SU linebacker Matt Conroy made the leap from the third team.

Campanale, a senior from Shrewsbury, Mass, was recently announced as a finalist for the Gagliardi Trophy, which honors the top student-athlete in Division III football. Campanale increases RMC's streak of J. Stokeley Fulton Award winners to four straight seasons. He is the first repeat winner since former Guilford College signal-caller Matt Pawlowski won twice in 2014 and 2015. Campanale is currently ranked fourth in the country in passing efficiency with a 200.3 rating. He has completed 127-of-183 passes for an ODAC-best 69.4 completion percentage. He has thrown for 2,220 yards and 19 touchdowns against just four interceptions. He has also run for 179 yards and a touchdown. Campanale has orchestrated one of Division III's best offenses, which ranks sixth in the country in time of possession (34:18) and seventh in scoring (48.8 ppg).

Russell, a fifth-year from Richmond, Va., was a disruptive force in opposing backfields all season as he finished as the ODAC leader in sacks with 12.0. That total is a new single-season record for Averett football, tied for sixth in Division III, and is 6.5 more than the next closest ODAC player. Russell, winner of the final two ODAC Defensive Player of the Week awards and a D3football.com Team of the Week selection in week 10, finished fifth in the ODAC in tackles with 85 tackles (36 solo). His 19.0 tackles for loss were second-best in the league. He cost opposing offenses the most yards from scrimmage at 89 with 72 coming via sacks. Russell posted at least a half-sack in 8-of-10 games played with a career-high 3.0 sacks as part of a 4.0 TFL outing in a 34-13 win at Guilford.

Arruza is in his 20th season guiding the Yellow Jackets football program. This is Arruza's sixth ODAC top coaching honor, joining the awards he earned in 2008, 2016, 2018, 2021 (spring), and 2022. Randolph-Macon, ranked eighth in the country by both D3football.com and the AFCA, are 11-0 for the second straight season heading into the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The 11 wins tie last year's program-record for victories. RMC lifted its record 14th ODAC trophy two weekends ago. Arruza enters Saturday's second round contest with 19th-ranked Ithaca College with a 135-68 (.665) career record.

Crawford, a first-year from Swarthmore, Pa., stepped into the Washington and Lee multi-faceted backfield and helped the rushing attack rank as the fourth-most prolific unit in the country at 288.4 yards per game. Crawford carried the ball 110 times in his rookie season, racking up 409 yards and a team-best 10 rushing touchdowns. He posted three games with two TD runs, including a 13-carry outing where he posted a season-best 87 yards in a 48-25 win over Guilford.

Pack, a senior from Caldwell, W.Va., shines on and off the field for Washington and Lee. In the classroom, Pack maintains a perfect 4.00 grade point average as an accounting major with a psychology minor. Winner of the LK Johnson Rosasco Scholar for rising junior business administration students, Pack is a multi-honoree on the ODAC All-Academic Team and a 2022 W&L Scholar Athlete. He serves as the General Secretary for Mock Convention, one of just six members of a very selective Executive Committee that leads a completely student-run organization that manages one of the oldest and most prestigious Mock Conventions in the country. Pack, who is a member of Kappa Alpha Order fraternity, volunteers at the Rockbridge Area Recreation Organization helping in various sports including soccer, basketball, and baseball. He spent the summer of 2023 as a consulting intern at Pointe Advisory. He is also an industrial group analyst for Washington and Lee Real Estate Society, which manages roughly $1.5 million of the University's endowment.

On the field, Pack finished the season with 27 tackles (13) solo from his defensive end post. He registered 7.5 tackles for a loss including 5.0 sacks, second-best on the squad. He set back opposing offenses 40 yards from scrimmage. He notched a pair of forced fumbles, one each in wins over Methodist University (54-14) and at Hampden-Sydney (21-17).
