VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --- Virginia Wesleyan University has advanced to each of the past three ODAC women's soccer championship games. The Marlins collected their second conference title during that stretch on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 triumph over Washington and Lee University in Virginia Beach.
Virginia Wesleyan (16-3-1) have now won three overall ODAC women's soccer trophies, tying Roanoke College for fourth-most in league history.
The win awards the Marlins the ODAC's automatic entry to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Washington and Lee (13-3-4) and any other potential ODAC entry must wait to see if they receive one of 22 at-large bids to the 64-team bracket.
The NCAA selection show is set for 1:30 p.m. ET on Monday, November 6, on ncaa.com.
Scoring was at a premium on Sunday with both squads' defenses and goalkeepers up to the task. WLU (12) and VWU (11) combined to fire 23 shots at each other's frames with keepers combining for 11 saves. The Marlins'
Rachel Quigley made seven stops with several key saves, while the Generals'
Sydney Smith was just as impressive with four stops including at least one with Marlins' on the doorstep.
The lone goal of the contest came from
Julia Marrone in the 26th minute.
Alaina Alston's both towards the top of the six yard box was turned into the net by Marrone's left foot.
Both teams had chances throughout the contest with the likes of
Sarah Zimmerman and
Sophie Berman for WLU and
Shyenne Diaz and
Alexis Miller for VWU providing nervous moments for opposing defenses. But the Marlins unit led by Quigley and tournament MOP
Sam Crawford kept the clean sheet to collect the league trophy.
