ODAC Announces All-ODAC Women's Soccer Awards

Marlins Garner Seven on All-Conference Teams, Four Individual Awards

FOREST, Va. --- Virginia Wesleyan University collected a league-high seven all-conference honors in addition to four special individual laurels to highlight the 2023 All-ODAC Women's Soccer Awards.

Marlins centerback Sam Crawford earned ODAC Player of the Year honors for a second time in addition to last season's top defensive honor. VWU keeper Rachel Quigley was tabbed the ODAC Defensive Player of the Year as well as the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Marlins mentor Jeff Bowers received ODAC Coach of the Year recognition from his peers. Roanoke College forward Rebecca Carr garnered ODAC Rookie of the Year accolades.

While much of the 2023 awards lists features new star players, 15 of this year's honorees appeared on the 2022 all-conference chart. That includes seven members of the All-ODAC First Team. Crawford and VWU teammate, forward Shyenne Diaz, repeat as first team selections along with University of Lynchburg centerback Haleigh Casey. Roanoke forward Morgan O'Neill and Washington and Lee University defender Mady Laudisi moved up from last year's All-ODAC Second Team.

Quigley and Generals midfield standout Sarah Zimmerman made the leap from the 2022 All-ODAC Third Team to this season's first team.

Crawford, graduate student from Bensalem, Pa., is one of the most decorated women's soccer players in ODAC history as she is now a five-time All-ODAC honoree with four selections to the first team. She has earned four special individual honors from the ODAC coaches, including the 2019 rookie of the year award and the 2021 player of the year. She was the first recipient of the defensive player of the year award instituted in 2022. While she got forward to register one assist this season, Crawford is invaluable to organizing the Marlins backline and stifling the opponents' attack as a fluid central defender. She is a key factor in transitioning VWU from offense to defense, which helped the Marlins to not only three straight appearances in the ODAC championship game (with two titles), but a national semifinal appearance last season.

Quigley, a senior from Columbus, N.J., is now a two-time All-ODAC honoree pairing this year's awards with a third team selection in 2022. She is the third Marlin to receive the scholar-athlete of the year award and first since former forward Jessica Edelman claimed back-to-back honors in 2011-12. In the classroom, Quigley maintains a 3.98 grade point average as a double major in psychology and recreational therapy. She is President of the Rho Phi Lambda (recreational therapy) and Sport & Recreation Management honor societies. She is also a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma (collegiate athlete) and Psi Chi (psychology) honor societies. The Batten Honors College Fellow Scholarship winner is a three-time ODAC All-Academic Team honoree. Quigley volunteers for Norfolk Therapeutic Recreation and with the FACT (Families of Autistic Children) Adaptive Bike Camp, among several other volunteer-based endeavors.

On the field, Quigley leads the ODAC in goals against average (.471) and shutouts (9) entering the NCAA Tournament with more than 1,500 minutes spent guarding Virginia Wesleyan's goal. She is second in save percentage (.867) and has allowed just eight goals, the fewest in the conference. In ODAC play, only one shot made it past Quigley into the net, good for a .124 GAA. She also posted an eye-opening .958 save percentage against league foes.

Bowers is in the midst of his 24th season guiding the Marlins women's soccer program. He owns a career record of 340-108-52 (.732) entering the NCAA Tournament. This marks the fourth time Bowers has been honored by his peers with the league's coach of the year award, joining recognition he received in 2003, 2005, and 2021. The Marlins have played in each of the past three ODAC title games and claimed championships in 2021 and 2023. This year's trophy is the third in program history.

Carr, a first-year from Springfield, Va., has been a key component of Roanoke's attack throughout her first campaign in Salem. She led the Maroons with 18 points on seven goals and four assists while playing in all 19 games with three starts. Her seven goals tie for eighth in the conference, while her 18 points are tied for ninth. Carr registered her first career goal and assist in RC's 2-0 victory over Lynchburg in a non-conference affair in mid-September. She posted her first multi-goal game with a brace in a 3-0 win over Mary Baldwin.
