ODAC Football Report: Week 3

Two Remain Unbeaten Following ODAC/USA South Matchup Weekend

All ODAC teams were in action on Saturday in non-conference play as the league's squads took part in the ODAC/USA South Challenge. ODAC schools went 6-2 against members from our southern neighbor with two remains remaining unbeaten through three weeks of competition.

Randolph-Macon, ranked 12th in the country by D3football.com, was one of three ODAC units to post 50 or more points in their wins on Saturday, topping Southern Virginia University, 51-10, in Buena Vista. The Yellow Jackets improved to 3-0 along with Averett, joining RMC atop the league standings. The Cougars' result was much closer with AU outlasting the Tornados, 17-14, on the road.

Hampden-Sydney and Washington and Lee thumped their opponents by 70 combined points. The Tigers improved to 2-1 with a 58-28 victory at Greensboro College, while the Generals torched Methodist University, 54-14, coming off their bye week. Bridgewater also lit up the scoreboard in its clash with N.C Wesleyan University, dispatching the Bishops, 41-12, in Bridgewater.

Like Averett, Ferrum featured a much tighter affair with LaGrange College. The Panthers never trailed in posting a 13-10 home victory.

Shenandoah and Guilford stumbled in their week three outings. The Hornets fourth-quarter comeback bid from a 27-6 deficit came up short in a 27-20 home loss to Maryville College (Tenn.). The Quakers traveled to Alabama to meet Huntingdon College, with the Hawks scoring a 40-14 win.

Win/loss records for the ODAC's head coaches are updated for each ODAC Football Report. They are accurate as of the date of the report.

  • KEYSHAWN WILDER | SHENANDOAH | SR | CB | BALTIMORE, MD
Wilder, a senior from Baltimore, Md., put together a big day in Shenandoah's 27-20 setback to Maryville College (Tenn.) following the Hornets bye in week two. Wilder, who made 10 tackles including one for a loss, essentially accounted for three turnovers against the Scots as he intercepted a pair of passes and blocked a punt. The latter play came with five minutes to go in the fourth quarter as Wilder not just blocked the punt, but took it right off the punter's foot and sprinted 30 yards for the final touchdown of the game. Wilder's first interception came at the end of the first quarter. He picked off a pass at the MVC 24-yard line and returned it to the Scots' 15. That led to SU's first points, a 27-yard field goal by Scott Martin. Wilder took the ball away in the third quarter, again leading to Hornets points. He stepped in front of a pass in a crowded area, hauling it in before stepping out of bounds at the MVC 33-yard line. The ensuing drive ended with a 25-yard Martin field goal. Through two games, Wilder has intercepted three passes and blocked two kicks to go with 17 tackles.

His first TD through the air was to junior wide receiver Austin Fernandez on a 65-yard post pattern over top of the Pride's defense at 5:27 of the second quarter.
