ODAC Football Report: Week 8

And Then There Were Two...

Our three unbeaten teams in league play were cut down to two 4-0 programs following week eight of the Division III football season and the fourth week of ODAC play.

Randolph-Macon and Washington and Lee both won big on Saturday to put exclamation points on their 4-0 records in conference matchups. Only one will remain unbeaten after next weekend with the Yellow Jackets traveling to Lexington for a showdown with the Generals.

RMC defeated Bridgewater, 49-16, on Saturday, removing the Eagles from the group of unbeaten teams in league play. The Yellow Jackets scored the first 35 points before BC turned the scoreboard just before halftime. RMC's opening 30-minute effort included a pair of pick-six interceptions.

Washington and Lee pitched a shutout at Ferrum, blanking the Panthers, 34-0. All five Generals touchdowns came on the ground as they rattled off 477 rushing yards and out-gained FC, 563-163, in terms of total offense. WLU commanded a 41:06-18:54 time of possession advantage and ran 33 more offensive plays (77-44) than Ferrum.

Hampden-Sydney returned to the win column in a home contest against Averett, but it was the Cougars that led 14-13 at halftime. The Tigers, who got a 50-yard TD pass as time expired in the first half, outscored AU, 29-7, in the second half to earn a 42-21 win.

Shenandoah led 14-0 before the first quarter was out and bookended the game with 21 unanswered points on the way to a 42-10 home win over Guilford. SU's offense showed off impressive balance after posting 251 rushing yards and 222 passing yards against the Quakers.

  • MATT CONROY | SHENANDOAH | JR | LB | BEL AIR, MD.
Conroy, a junior from Bel Air, Md., picks up his second ODAC defensive weekly award of the season after helping Shenandoah post a 42-10 win over Guilford on Saturday. Conroy may have seen his tackle numbers come in a little lower than normal with five stops (4 solo) against the Quakers, but he registered two turnovers and nearly created a third in the Hornets strong defensive effort. In the fourth quarter, Conroy intercepted a pass at the SU 45-yard line to end GC's possession after two plays. After the Quakers took the ball back themselves, Conroy intercepted yet another pass, this time turning the takeaway into a pick-six as he returned it 19-yards to paydirt for a 35-10 lead. He nearly made it three straight possessions with a turnover as Conroy forced a fumble on Guilford's next drive only to see it recovered by the Quakers at the SU 17-yard line. As it turns out, Conroy's teammate, Sean Perry, intercepted a pass in the end zone on the next play. For the season, Conroy – who also had a QB hurry against Guilford – is second in the ODAC in total tackles (65) and first in solo stops (37). He is tied for fourth in tackles for loss (6.5) and has three interceptions, which ties for second with several players in the conference.

  • DANTE CASCIOLA | RANDOLPH-MACON | SR | QB | CHARLOTTE, N.C.
Casciola, a senior from Charlotte, N.C., collects his first ODAC weekly honor after helping nationally 24th-ranked Randolph-Macon remain unbeaten in conference play (4-0) and improve to 7-1 overall. Casciola accounted for four touchdowns in the Yellow Jackets 49-16 win over Bridgewater. He was 10-of-16 passing for 211 yards and three touchdowns and added 25 yards and another score on six rushes. His two-yard TD run capped a 15-play 79-yard drive that covered 9:18 on the game's first possession. Casciola hit Jackson Currie with a 30-yard touchdown pass later in the first quarter for a 14-0 lead. He and Jason Moore connected in the second quarter on a 19-yard touchdown to make it 28-0. Casciola's final scoring throw went to Kwesi Clarke covering nine yards in the third quarter for a 42-10 advantage. For the season, Casciola is 71-of-112 (63.4%) passing for 887 yards and six touchdowns against two interceptions. He owns a 144.0 efficiency rating. He has run for 198 yards and five touchdowns on 55 carries.

  • ETHAN DOWDY | HAMPDEN-SYDNEY | SO | WR/KR/PR | POWHATAN, VA.
Dowdy, a sophomore from Powhatan, Va., earns his second ODAC weekly honor – first for special teams – after helping Hampden-Sydney return to the win column with a 42-21 homecoming triumph over Averett. Dowdy registered 124 total return yards on five kick returns including 81 yards and two punt returns. He returned a punt 65 yards to the AU 15-yard line to set up the Tigers first second-half score for a 20-14 lead. He then added a 16-yard punt return that led to H-SC's next scoring drive and a 27-14 advantage. Dowdy finished the game with 184 all-purpose yards as he caught four passes for 53 yards and added a seven-yard touchdown run to open the Tigers' account at 6:40 of the first quarter. For the season, Dowdy has returned seven punts for 109 yards (15.6 avg.) and four kickoffs for 59 yards (14.8 avg.). Offensively, Dowdy leads the ODAC in receiving yards (572) and touchdowns (9) on 41 catches, the second-most in the league.
