FOREST, Va. --- Drama was already a feature of the final day of the ODAC field hockey regular season with the result from a clash of unbeaten teams determining the regular season champion. Bake in overtime in that contest plus two additional ties in the final standings and the recipe lent to an epic Saturday.
Nationally 11th-ranked Shenandoah University saw
Farren Winter cap
Kaitlyn Nakamura's nearly half-field breakaway with the deciding goal in the 70th minute to secure a 2-1 victory for SU at 13th-ranked University of Lynchburg to secure the regular season crown and the top seed heading into the upcoming ODAC field hockey tournament.
Shenandoah (16-2, 8-0 ODAC) and Lynchburg (14-3, 7-1) earn byes through Tuesday's quarterfinals in the six-team bracket. They will host semifinal contests on Thursday.
The quarterfinal host will be Bridgewater College (5-3) and Washington and Lee University (5-3). The Eagles' 2-0 win over Sweet Briar College on Friday night coupled with the Generals' 2-0 triumph over Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday left BC and WLU tied in the final table. Bridgewater defeated Washington and Lee, 1-0, during the regular season, which affords the Eagles the higher seed in the ODAC's tiebreaking procedures.
Virginia Wesleyan (12-5, 4-4) will be the fifth seed and make a return trip to Lexington to square off with Washington and Lee in the quarterfinals. The Marlins are in the field hockey tournament field for the first time since 2016.
The remaining position in the field also needed head-to-head tiebreakers to set. Roanoke College (8-9, 3-5) posted a 7-0 victory over EMU on Saturday to tie the Maroons with Randolph-Macon College (9-8, 3-5) in the ODAC standings. RMC did not play this weekend, having already completed its regular season. Roanoke registered a 1-0 win over the Yellow Jackets in their official ODAC match, awarding the Maroons the final seed in the field. They will travel to Bridgewater for quarterfinal play.
