ODAC Football Report: Week 9

Randolph-Macon Perched Atop ODAC Standings

ODAC fans were treated to a quartet of good games during Week 9 of the Division III season, a set that left one team alone at the top of the ODAC standings.

Randolph-Macon is that squad, sitting at 5-0 in league play (7-1 overall) following a 20-7 road win at Washington and Lee. Two short TD runs by Dante Casciola and two field goals by Kyle Ihle provided RMC its offense while the Yellow Jackets defense limited the Generals rushing attack to just 89 yards.

Ferrum returned to the win column in yet another 20-7 result on the road at Guilford. Running back Jahylen Lee cracked 200 yards rushing for the first time in the ODAC this season while kicker Seth Deaton booted a school-record field goal.

Hampden-Sydney won for the second straight week with a 28-21 road win at Bridgewater. Carter Sido threw for three touchdowns and Terry Hicks ran for 195 yards Brendan Wallace led a stout Tigers defense that forced a pair of turnovers.

Shenandoah joined BC and H-SC at 3-2 in the league table with its second straight win, a 41-14 triumph at Averett. The Hornets got five rushing touchdowns from Jalen Redfearn (3) and Bryce Buchanan (2) to power the offense while SU's defense took the ball away three times in not allowing the Cougars on the scoreboard until the fourth quarter.

Just two weeks of regular season play remain before we learn not only which teams will play in the Division III tournament, but which two ODAC squads will square off with Landmark Conference teams in the second edition of the Chesapeake Challenge in Salem on November 23.

  • BRENDAN WALLACE | HAMPDEN-SYDNEY | SR | LB | VIRGINIA BEACH, VA.
Wallace, a senior from Virginia Beach, Va., continued his productive and disruptive ways in helping Hampden-Sydney to a second straight win, 28-21, at Bridgewater to move the Tigers into a three-way tie for third in the ODAC at 3-2 with the Eagles and Shenandoah. Wallace registered a game-high 10 stops against BC with nine solo tackles. He notched one stop behind the line of scrimmage and registered a pair of quarterback hurries in addition to breaking up a pass. Wallace got involved in the turnover game, recovering his second fumble of the season at the Tigers 12-yard line to preserve H-SC's 17-0 advantage in the second quarter. For the season, Wallace is fifth in the ODAC in tackles (65) and fourth in solo stops (32). He is second in tackles for loss (11.5) and lost yardage (59) and is tied with Washington and Lee's Will Mahmud for first in sacks (5.0).

  • JAHYLEN LEE | FERRUM | SO | RB | ROCKY MOUNT, VA.
Lee, a sophomore from Rocky Mount, Va., is the first ODAC back to run for 200 yards in a game this season after helping Ferrum to a 20-7 win at Guilford on Saturday. Lee carried the ball 30 times for 211 yards and a touchdown while adding 14 receiving yards to give him 225 yards of total offense for the game. Lee's scoring run covered five yards and capped a 12-play 78-yard drive in the first quarter for a 10-0 lead with 4:58 to go in the frame. Lee registered six rushes of 10 or more yards – averaging 21.8 yards on those carries – showcased by a 59-yard sprint to set up the Panthers final touchdown in the fourth quarter. That run is the second-longest in the ODAC this year. For the season, Lee is second in the ODAC in rushing yards (768) and rushing touchdowns (9). He is third in rushing yards per game (96.0) and tops the chart in carries (153). He is averaging 5.0 yards per carry.

  • SETH DEATON | FERRUM | SR | PK | NEWPORT NEWS, VA.
Deaton, a senior from Newport News, Va., put his name in the Ferrum and ODAC record books after helping the Panthers return to the win column with a 20-7 triumph at Guilford. Deaton accounted for eight points with two made field goals and a pair of converted PATs. Deaton's second field goal covered 36 yards for a 13-7 lead midway thru the third quarter, but it was his first boot that impacted school and conference history. Deaton opened the game's scoring with a 48-yard thump to snap the previous school-record of 47 yards set by Clint Slappey in 2007. That field goal is tied for the eighth-longest in ODAC history. For the season, Deaton is 10-of-13 on field goals – both totals the most in the ODAC – and has converted 16 PATs for 46 total points (5.8/game).
