FOREST, Va. --- Shenandoah University boasts three all-conference standouts while nationally-ranked Washington and Lee University garnered two all-league team honors plus three special individual distinctions to highlight the 2024 All-ODAC Women's Basketball Awards.
For the second straight season, Generals' forward
Mary Schleusner received two special individual awards as she was named both the ODAC Player and Defensive Player of the Year following top defensive and rookie honors last year. Teammate and guard
Hanna Malik received ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition from the league's athletic communications personnel.
Randolph-Macon College mentor
Lindsey Burke earned ODAC Coach of the Year honors in a vote of her peers. Fellow Yellow Jacket and point guard
Sam Smith was tabbed the ODAC Rookie of the Year.
ODAC coaches recognize 18 players across the All-ODAC First, Second, and Third Teams. Ten players on this season's awards lists were honored for at least a second straight season with five of those repeat honorees populating this year's first team.
WLU's Schleusner and Malik are first team selections for a second straight season. The same can be said of Shenandoah playmaker
Terese Greene. SU's floor general,
Maddie Kimble, moved up to the first team from last year's second team. Guilford College forward
Anna Giannopoulou also moved up from the 2023 second team.
Bridgewater College guard
Riley Corcoran and Roanoke College forward
Rose Sande repeat as second team choices, while Randolph College guard
Kylie Stark appears on the second team after earning first team honors in 2023. Shenandoah forward
Shawnise Campbell is a third team choice for a second season running, while BC post
Jaden Alsberry garners third team recognition after receiving second team laurels last year.
Schleusner, a sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., has enjoyed a special season in helping lead defending ODAC champion Washington and Lee to the top seed in the conference tournament bracket. She is among the national leaders in several statistical categories highlighted by her #1 ranking in rebounds (376) and defensive rebounds per game (10.2). She is in total rebounding (15.0) and double-doubles (20), fifth in field goals made (227), seventh in blocked shots (78), eighth in points (560) and blocked shots per game (3.12), and 11th in scoring (22.4). Schleusner owns ODAC single-game season highs in points (38), rebounds (25), and blocked shots (8) with her rebounding total setting a new WLU program record. She has scored in double figures in all but two games with 18 games of 20 or more points and four outings of more than 30 points. Schleusner has pulled down 10 or more rebounds in 22-of-25 games played with five contests of 20 or more boards.
Burke is in the midst of her fourth season guiding Randolph-Macon women's basketball. This is her first ODAC top coaching award. Burke, who entered the ODAC Tournament with a 59-22 (.728) career record, guided the Yellow Jackets to a 17-8 regular season showing to claim the third seed in the conference bracket. That record included a 15-5 start to RMC's schedule, tying the program's best start under Burke from last season. This year's effort saw the squad overcome the unexpected loss due to injury after four games of two-time All-ODAC First Team forward Catherine Kagey. Randolph-Macon is currently ranked fifth in Region VI by the Division III Women's Basketball Championship Committee.
Smith, a freshman from Chesterfield, Va., did not simply integrate well into the Yellow Jackets squad, but has proven to be a key reason for their continued success, starting all 25 games as RMC's point guard. In addition to averaging 8.2 points and 4.0 rebounds, Smith enters the ODAC Tournament leading the league in assists per game (4.0) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.6 -- 99-to-61) and tied for first in total assists (99). She is ninth in the conference in steals (46) and 11th in steals per game (1.8). Smith had arguably her best game of the season against top ranked WLU in Randolph-Macon's third-to-last outing as she set career highs for points (20), rebounds (8), and assists (8).
Malik, a senior from Raleigh, N.C., shines both on and off the court as she pairs this year's scholar-athlete award with two straight All-ODAC First Team nods and a third team selection. In the classroom, Malik maintains a 3.75 grade point average as a cognitive and behavioral science major. She is a six-time W&L Scholar Athlete and three-time member of the ODAC All-Academic Team. She was also named CSC Academic All-District the past two seasons. Malik serves as Campus Captain for The Hidden Opponent, a national non-profit that focuses on supporting student-athlete mental health and ending the stigma surrounding sports culture. She also serves as social media coordinator for "24" at WLU, the Generals' version of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
On the court, Malik is one of 15 players in program history with more than 1,000 points scored in her career. She is WLU's all-time leader in three-point and free throw shooting percentages, figures which currently stand at 37.2-percent (242-of-651) and 87.9-percent (181-of-206), respectively. She is 18 three-pointers away from tying WLU's program record. This season, Malik is the ODAC best sharp-shooter as she leads the conference in three-point shooting (35.5% -- 71-of-200), three-pointers made (71), and three-pointers made per game (2.8). She is fifth in scoring (14.1) and points scored (352). She has scored in double figures in 19-of-25 games played with six outings of 20 or more points. That includes a career-high 33 points powered by an 8-of-10 showing from deep in a win over Guilford in January.
