EASTLAKE, Ohio --- The Classic Park crowd saw a classic ending on Saturday evening, just not one ODAC and Randolph-Macon College fans wanted to see.
Birmingham-Southern College kept its season -- and school -- alive with a two-run walk-off homer to left by first baseman Jackson Webster to earn a 9-7 victory, ending RMC's season after two games in the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship finals in Eastlake, Ohio.
The Panthers (33-15) move on to face the loser of Saturday's final game between the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Salve University. Randolph-Macon (33-16) completes its campaign currently
ranked 24th in the country by D3baseball.com.
The BSC-RMC tilt may have been the most anticipated and publicized Division III baseball events in recent member. On Friday, Birmingham-Southern lost its first game of the double-elimination round on the same day the
school's doors official closed after more than 160 years, as reported by ESPN. That made Saturday's contest their first under a banner that flies only as long as the Panthers' baseball team is active.
The early going belonged to BSC as the Panthers put up three runs in the first inning and led 4-0 after three frames. Webster not only hit the game-winning blast, but he opened the scoring with a similar stroke, this time a two-run shot to left-center. Two batters later, right fielder Charlie Banks followed with a solo shot to the same location.
Banks picked up a second RBI in the third inning as his double to left-center brought around DH Ian Hancock.
Randolph-Macon's offense flipped the switch in the fifth inning with the first two of seven unanswered runs to take a 7-4 lead after 7.5 innings. With two down, shortstop
Grayson Bush doubled to left-center and came jogging home on right fielder
Eli Brooks' triple down the right field line. He scored on second baseman
Jordan Hills' single to short.
The Yellow Jackets tacked on two more in the seventh. Left fielder
Matt Myers was hit by a pitch to start the inning and promptly stole second base. Bush was then plunked to put two YJs on base. Myers stole third base in between a pair of outs and came home to score on centerfielder
Jon Quici's single through the right side. DH
Carter Schmitt, who went 4-for-5 on the day, hit one off the cap that sent a slow cue-shot to short off the lefty's bat for an infield single that scored Bush.
Randolph-Macon stormed ahead with three runs in the eighth inning. First baseman
Myles Webb led off with a single to left-center and moved up two bases on a sac bunt and a wild pitch. Myers brought him home with a single to center. Bush singled down the right field line and moved to second on a second sacrifice bunt. Two wild pitches on back-to-back offerings gifted RMC two more runs with Myers and Bush sliding in safely.
The Panthers found their footing in the bottom of the frame with two more runs to tie the game at 7-all. Left fielder Jakob Zito had the bit hit with a two-run triple to center to bring around Banks and Hancock. BSC nearly scored one more run on a suicide squeeze bunt by shortstop Ty Truett, but Webb charged from first and glove-flipped the ball to catcher
Chaz Harvey to tag out Zito before he reached the dish. That out proved pivotal as pinch hitter Grant Morgan drove in Truett with a single through the left side to tie the game and set up Webster's game-winner in the ninth.
Charlie Horne earned the win for BSC, improving to 2-2 with 1.1 innings of relief. Michael Shanahan took the loss for RMC, finishing the season at 2-1.
Banks' three hits led three Panthers with multiple knocks. Webster drove in four runs while Banks and Zito plated a pair.
Schmitt led all players with four hits, while Webb and Bush added two each. Five different players drove in runs for RMC with Bush scoring three times.
