ODAC Football Report: Week 3

Two Remain Unbeaten Headed into Bye Week

Two conference schools remain unbeaten through three weeks of competition with seven of eight programs headed to their scheduled byes next weekend. The ODAC went 4-2 in its matchups with teams from the Southern Athletic Association (SAA).

Guilford improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2016 by erasing a 14-point deficit to down Sewanee, 44-35, in Greensboro. Shenandoah, coming off their bye week in Week Two, moved to 2-0 with a 35-21 triumph over Rhodes College in Winchester. The Hornets will be the lone active ODAC team next weekend.

Hampden-Sydney and Bridgewater each improved to 2-1 with wins over SAA foes. The Tigers scored the last points of the game midway through the fourth quarter and then held firm on defense to post a 38-10 win over Centre College at home in a contest that featured seven lead changes. The Eagles found the end zone once in each quarter and kept Millsaps College off the board in the first and fourth frames on the way to a 28-14 win in Jackson, Mississippi.

Ferrum also moved to 2-1 on the season with a 36-10 road win at Averett in a non-conference tilt. They will face each other in league play in Week 11. The Panthers scored in each quarter while their defense kept the Cougars off board for 43:55 of clock time between AU's field goal to open the game's scoring in the first quarter and their touchdown as the final points of the contest early in the fourth frame.

Nationally ninth-ranked Randolph-Macon saw its 28-game regular season winning streak snapped with a 28-24 home loss to Berry College in the schools' first-ever matchup. The Yellow Jackets run was the fourth-longest in the country at all levels of collegiate football.

Washington and Lee found itself in the tightest matchup of the day, dropping a 16-10 result at Trinity (Texas) University in San Antonio. The Generals pitched a second-half shutout, but after finding the end zone in the first quarter, they also could not move the scoreboard until a field goal early in the fourth.

Win/loss records for the ODAC's head coaches are updated for each ODAC Football Report. They are accurate as of the date of the report.

  • JAELAN MATHEWS | BRIDGEWATER | GR. | LB | COLUMBIA, MD.
Mathews, a graduate student from Columbia, Md., put together a big performance to help Bridgewater win at Millsaps College, 28-14, on Saturday. Mathews registered eight total tackles including six solo stops. He posted 2.5 tackles for a loss that included 1.0 quarterback sacks costing the Majors nine yards of offense. Mathews, who also broke up a pass, came up with quite possibly the biggest play of the game at the outset of the fourth quarter. With Millsaps on the BC 1-yard line on 1st-and-goal, Mathews jarred the ball loose from the ball carrier with teammate Chase Jacobs recovering to preserve the Eagles 21-14 lead. The momentum shift helped keep the Majors off the board for the remainder of the contest with BC tacking on one more touchdown.

  • ETHAN DOWDY | HAMPDEN-SYDNEY | SO. | WR | POWHATAN, VA.
Dowdy, a sophomore from Powhatan, Va., etched his name in the Hampden-Sydney and ODAC record books in helping the Tigers post a 38-34 victory over Centre College in a contest that featured seven lead changes. Dowdy posted career-highs of nine receptions for 101 with four touchdown catches. The latter total ties both the H-SC and ODAC single-game records. He joins former standouts Drew Smith and Kyle Vance in Tigers history  to achieve that total and is the ninth player in conference history to haul in four TD passes. He is the first since 2016 to hit that mark. Dowdy pulled in a 15-yard scoring pass in the first quarter before adding three in the second half of 28 and 16 yards followed by the game-deciding 15-yard scoring catch midway through the fourth quarter.

  • ELIJAH SWETT | HAMPDEN-SYDNEY | SR. | PK | MATTHEWS, N.C.
Swett, a senior from Matthews, N.C., put up eight points in helping Hampden-Sydney notch the first home win for head coach Vince Luvara in the Tigers 38-34 triumph over Centre College. Swett connected on all five of his point after attempts and made his first field goal of the season on his lone attempt, a 37-yard boot in the first quarter that gave H-SC its first edge in a contest that featured seven lead changes. Swett is now 13-of-13 on PATs and 1-of-2 on field goal tries this season.
