ODAC Men's Basketball Report: Week 12

Much like the women's ranks, ODAC men's basketball will feature a predictable schedule cadence over the final month of the regular season. A dozen league games featured 14 overall contests – ODAC teams won both non-league games. Hampden-Sydney, Randolph-Macon, and Virginia Wesleyan – ranked eighth, 13th, and 25th by D3hoops.com, respectively – are 8-1 in conference contests. All three are 15-3 overall with RMC winners of 12 straight, H-SC triumphant in five consecutive games, and VWU riding a four-game run. Roanoke is 8-2 following its tight loss to the Yellow Jackets last week, while Guilford is 7-2. Both RC and GC are 14-4 and receiving votes towards the D3hoops.com poll.

    Wilson, a senior center from Hampton, Va., helped Virginia Wesleyan move into the D3hoops.com top-25 rankings by contributing to a pair of Marlins' ODAC wins last week. VWU has now won four straight games and stands at 15-3 overall and 8-1 in league play. Wilson blocked 10 shots over the two games and averaged 12.0 points to go with 3.5 rebounds as Virginia Wesleyan held two more teams below 70 points, a feat the Marlins have accomplished 14 times this season. Wilson blocked three shots in an 88-62 win at Shenandoah. He was 6-of-9 shooting on the way to 12 points with four rebounds. In a 62-59 win at Bridgewater, Wilson turned away a career-best seven shots. He again scored 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting to go with three rebounds. For the season, Wilson is second in the ODAC in blocked shots (31) and blocked shots per game (1.8). He is fifth in field goal shooting (.568; 67-of-118) and 13th in rebounding (6.0) while averaging 10.3 points per game.

    Fernald, a junior forward from Charlotte, N.C., helped nationally eighth-ranked Hampden-Sydney stay atop the ODAC standings with two more conference wins, improving the Tigers records to 15-3 overall and 8-1 and league games. Fernald averaged 20.5 points per game and shot .621 (18-of-29) from the field to go with 10.5 rebounds per contest including 11 offensive rebounds that lead to 15 second-chance points. In a 105-92 victory at Randolph, Fernald went for a career- and game-high 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting and 2-of-3 from the foul line. He pulled down nine rebounds including six via the offensive glass towards 11 second-chance points. He also handed out three assists and registered a steal. In a 78-67 win over Ferrum, Fernald notched the second double-double of his career and season with 19 points and 12 rebounds. He was 8-of-15 from the field and ripped down five offensive boards towards four second-chance points. He chipped in one assist, one steal, and one blocked shot in a 24-minute shift. For the season, Fernald tied for fifth in the ODAC in rebounding (7.7) and tied for 14th in scoring (12.6). He is sixth in field goal shooting (.564; 84-of-149), tied for seventh in assists per game (3.2), and tied for eighth in assists (54).

    • Caleb Farrish, GC: averaged 5.5 points and 5.0 rebounds with 2 blocked shots in wins over Mary Washington (72-59) and Shenandoah (67-63)
    • Jamarcus Brown, LYN: averaged 10.5 points and 5.0 rebounds with 2 assists, 3 steals, and 4 blocked shots in an ODAC split at Averett (W, 87-57) and versus Washington and Lee (L, 74-73)
    • Michael Gray, LYN: averaged 18.5 points and 3.5 rebounds with 7 assists and a 6-of-6 showing from the line in an ODAC split at Averett (W, 87-57) and versus Washington and Lee (L, 74-73)
    • Liam Joyce, RMC: averaged 8.0 points and 7.0 rebounds with 4 assists, 3 steals, and 4 blocked shots in ODAC wins over Bridgewater (89-62) and at Roanoke (78-64); RMC has now won 12 straight games
    • Keishawn Pulley Jr., RMC: averaged 19.0 points and 2.5 rebounds while shooting .536 (15-of-28) from the field in ODAC wins over Bridgewater (89-62) and at Roanoke (78-64); went 7-of-10 from 3-point at RC and has scored in double figures in 10 straight games; RMC has now won 12 straight games
    • Joshua McClary, RC: averaged 15.5 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting .500 (13-of-26) from field with 10 assists and 3 steals in an ODAC split at Ferrum (W, 98-66) and versus #13 Randolph-Macon (L, 78-64)
    • Paul Anderson, VWU: Averaged 14.0 points powered by 6-of-10 from 3-point and 10-of-13 from the line with 4 steals in ODAC wins at Shenandoah (88-62) and at Bridgewater (62-59)
    • Colin Ryan, WLU: averaged 13.5 points and 8.5 rebounds with 14 assists and went 9-of-11 from the line in ODAC wins at EMU (75-70) and at Lynchburg (74-73); game-winning layup with 0.1 to play at LYN
