FOREST, Va. --- A three-way tie atop the conference table tells fans all they need to know about the competitive nature of ODAC field hockey with the announcement of the six-team ODAC Field Hockey Tournament bracket following four contests to close the regular season on Saturday.
The University of Lynchburg, Shenandoah University, and Washington and Lee University each posted 7-1 league records to share top position in the standings. The application of the league's tiebreaking procedure went all the way to the fifth step before an clarity could be determined. Goals allowed amongst the tied team saw Lynchburg separate from Shenandoah and Washington and Lee with Lynchburg surrendering three goals to SU and WLU, while Shenandoah and Washington and Lee each gave up four. Lynchburg was awarded the No. 1 seed, but that left SU and WLU in a new tie. By league rule, that new tie restarts the tiebreaking process with the Hornets 3-2 win over the Generals in the regular season serving as the nod for SU to claim the second seed and WLU to play as the third seed.
Both nationally 18th-ranked Lynchburg (14-4, 7-1) and 20th-ranked Shenandoah (14-3, 7-1) receive byes into the semifinals, while 22nd-ranked Washington and Lee (13-4, 7-1) is joined by Randolph-Macon College (11-6, 5-3) as quarterfinal hosts on Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets will play as the fourth seed and welcome fifth-seeded Bridgewater College (8-9, 4-4) to Ashland in the opening round, while sixth-seeded Roanoke College (5-12, 3-5) travels north on I-81 to Lexington to meet the Generals in the quarterfinals.
