ODAC Football Report: Week 10

Randolph-Macon Clinches Division III Tournament Entry

Nationally-ranked Randolph-Macon – 18th by the AFCA and 21st by D3football.com – was resting at home on their scheduled bye in Week 10, but that didn't keep the Yellow Jackets from clinching the ODAC's automatic entry into Division III's 40-team postseason bracket and at least a share of their fourth straight and league-best 16th conference trophy.

This situation was created by Bridgewater's 45-42 road win at No. 25 (AFCA) Hampden-Sydney. That leaves Washington and Lee as the only team that can tie Randolph-Macon in the ODAC league table. The Yellow Jackets are 7-0 in conference games heading into the regular season finale against H-SC in the 130th playing of “The Game” in Ashland, while the Generals are 6-1 following their 35-14 home win over Roanoke, increasing their winning streak to five straight games. RMC has a leg-up towards the NCAA tournament given its 24-6 win over WLU in September.

Shenandoah returned to the win column on Saturday with a 52-14 triumph over Gallaudet. Averett earned its first victory of the season at Guilford, posting a 27-21 triumph over the Quakers.

  • SHALIN GREEN | BRIDGEWATER | EDGE
Green, a senior from Dale City, Va., earns his first ODAC weekly award after helping Bridgewater post a 45-42 road victory at 25th-ranked (AFCA) Hampden-Sydney on Saturday. Green was twice involved in the turnover game against the Tigers in addition to making three stops. In the first quarter, Green recovered a H-SC fumble on the 11th-play of the Tigers' opening drive, snuffing out a promising start for the home side. Then in the fourth quarter, Green put an end to a possible fourth-down conversion with a strip-sack of the H-SC quarterback. The Eagles' Oscar Whitely recovered the fumble, which led to Bridgewater's game-tying drive for a 42-42 deadlock with 7:04 to play. For the season, Green has made 26 tackles (15 solo) with 5.5 for a loss including 4.5 sacks. His fumble involvements on Saturday were his first of the year.

  • JAICERE BATEMAN | BRIDGEWATER | QUARTERBACK
Bateman, a junior from Lynchburg, Va., picked a great day to have his best game of the season in helping Bridgewater post a 45-42 road win at 25th-ranked (AFCA) Hampden-Sydney on Saturday. Bateman accounted for 312 yards of total offense and was responsible for five total touchdowns. He ran for a team-high and career-best 133 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries while throwing for 179 yards and three scores passing. The five total TDs tie a program record. Bateman opened the game's scoring with a two-yard touchdown run and then connected with Evan Welsh on a 62-yard scoring play to put BC ahead, 14-0, with 11:03 on the second quarter clock. Late in the third quarter, Bateman brought the Eagles to within seven points of tying Hampden-Sydney with a four-yard touchdown run to make it 35-28 H-SC. With Hampden-Sydney leading 42-28, Bateman fired two fourth quarter touchdown passes. The first one went to Ian Browne from 13-yards with 9:51 to go. Then Bateman and Welsh connected on a second TD pass, this one covering 12 yards to knot the score at 42-all. Bateman then engineered a stellar game-winning drive, using up every bit of the 4:23 on the clock before Agustin Miguel hit the winning field goal with 0:00 on the scoreboard. Bateman ran for 27 yards on five carries on that drive. For the season, Bateman has thrown for 1,777 yards and 10 touchdowns and rushed for 226 yards and eight more touchdowns.

  • AGUSTIN MIGUEL | BRIDGEWATER | KICKER
Miguel, a junior from Staunton, Va., collects his second ODAC special teams weekly award after posting the deciding points in Bridgewater's 45-42 road victory at 25th-ranked (AFCA) Hampden-Sydney on Saturday. Miguel made all six of his point-after tries to keep the Eagles on-schedule throughout the contest. While he did just miss (wide right) what would have been an ODAC-long 48-yard field goal attempt early in the second quarter, Miguel took on the pressure of a game-deciding situation in the fourth quarter. After Bridgewater used up nearly all of the 4:23 on the clock when it took possession, Miguel split the uprights as time expired from 26-yards out to clinch the Eagles' victory. Miguel also registered three touchdowns on seven kickoffs. For the season, Miguel is 6-for-7 on field goals with an ODAC-long 41 yard make on his record. He is 18-of-18 on PATs.
