ODAC Men's Basketball Report: Week 5

The first 11 games of the conference season dominated the league's 12-game men's basketball slate over the past week. Nationally second-ranked Randolph-Macon probably had the toughest start to a conference season in the country as the Yellow Jackets began its ODAC slate with twins over No. 8 Hampden-Sydney and #14 Roanoke. No. 13 Virginia Wesleyan and Lynchburg also went 2-0 against conference foes. RMC and Washington and Lee are both 6-0 and joined by VWU on six-game winning streaks with the Marlins owning a league-best seven victories (7-1).

  • KODY CLAYTON | GUILFORD | GUARD
    Clayton, a senior from Cary, N.C., registered 11 steals over two games, picking up his first ODAC weekly award in helping Guilford to a 1-1 showing. Clayton logged just 17 minutes on the floor in the Quakers 122-88 victory at crosstown rival Greensboro College, but he came away with a career-high eight steals. That marks the seventh-most in a game in Division III this season. He chipped in one point, two rebounds, and a pair of assists. On Wednesday in a 98-79 setback to No. 14 Roanoke, Clayton scored eight points and registered three more steals. He pulled down five boards (three defensive) and handed out four assists. For the season, Clayton leads the ODAC in steals (27) and steals per game (3.4). He is fourth in assists (31) and assists per game (3.9) and sixth in assists-to-turnover ratio (1.6). 

  • JABRIL ROBINSON | RANDOLPH-MACON | GUARD
    Robinson, a senior from Rockville, Md., helped power nationally second-ranked Randolph-Macon to a 2-0 start to conference play with wins over No. 8 Hampden-Sydney (85-50) and No. 14 Roanoke (66-61). Robinson averaged 19.5 points and shot 64-percent from the field over the two home wins. Against the Tigers, Robinson went 10-of-15 from the field including 2-of-4 from deep on the way to a game-best 24 points. He added two assists and four steals in a strong all-around showing. Against the Maroons,  Robinson registered 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting. He was 2-for-2 from the line for a second straight game, adding three rebounds and four assists to his line. For the season, Robinson is 10th in the ODAC in scoring (14.3) and field goal shooting (.554; 36-of-65).

    • Averett forward Tyler Stephens averaged 14.0 points and 8.5 rebounds with 3 steals and 2 blocked shots in the Cougars' 1-1 week. He reset his career-high scoring mark twice (13 and 15 points).
    • EMU playmaker Aaron Brooks averaged 19.0 points and 4.0 rebounds with 7 assists and 10 steals in the Royals' two outings.
    • Guilford guard Braylen Salters posted a pair of 20-plus point outings in averaging 24.5 points with 5 assists and 4 steals in the Quakers' 1-1 week.
    • Hampden-Sydney guard Travis Stickney averaged 17.0 points and 4.5 rebounds with 6 assists and 2 steals in the No. 8 Tigers' 1-1 week.
    • Lynchburg forward Jayson Easton 16.0 points and 5.5 rebounds with 2 assists and 2 steals in the Hornets' 2-0 week.
    • Randolph-Macon forward Ty Showalter averaged 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds with 2 assists and 3 blocked shots in the No. 2 Yellow Jackets' 2-0 week against No. 8 Hampden-Sydney (85-50) and #14 Roanoke (66-61).
    • Roanoke guard Marcus Morgan averaged 18.5 points and 3.0 rebounds with seven assists in the No. 14 Maroons' 1-1 start to ODAC play.
    • Virginia Wesleyan forward Amari Moorer averaged 17.5 points and 5.5 rebounds with 7 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocked shots in the No. 13 Marlins' 2-0 week.
    • Washington and Lee guard AJ Thomas posted 15 points with 2 assists in a 75-55 win over Averett.
