FOREST, Va. --- Nationally fourth-ranked
Randolph-Macon College extended its winning streak to 19 straight games -- the 2nd longest active run in Division III men's basketball -- with a win over Randolph College on Saturday to clinch the top seed in the upcoming ODAC Men's Basketball Tournament.
The Yellow Jackets (22-3, 15-1) headline the ODAC field for the seventh consecutive full ODAC Tournament -- not including the condensed 2021 event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year's event features both a reduction of the field to eight teams and a new schedule format with the quarterfinals competed at the top-four seeds on Wednesday followed by two days at the Salem Civic Center to conduct the semifinals and championship in Virginia's Championship City.
Before play began on Saturday, every single position in the ODAC standings was up for grabs. Several tiebreakers scenarios were prepared by the conference office with four put into action (one outside the tournament field). That included the second and third seeds featuring eighth-ranked
Hampden-Sydney College and 23rd-ranked
Roanoke College. Both finished with identical 21-4 and 14-2 overall and ODAC records, respectively. They went 1-1 in their two official league matchups, effectively bypassing the first tiebreaker procedure. The ODAC's five-point tiebreaker broke the stalemate with the Tigers' league-wide profile grading out slightly better than the Maroons, especially considering H-SC's early conference win over Randolph-Macon. Hampden-Sydney will play as the second seed, while Roanoke will occupy third position.
Virginia Wesleyan University (19-6, 12-4) needed overtime on Saturday to defeat (75-66) the
University of Lynchburg (13-12, 7-9) to secure the fourth seed as the final quarterfinal host. Furthermore, tiebreakers were needed to split the deadlock between VWU and
Guilford College (19-6, 12-4) in the ODAC table. The Marlins scored a 69-50 win at Ragan-Brown Field House in January in their lone meeting with the Quakers. As it turns out, Guilford as the fifth seed will travel to fourth-seeded VWU in the quarterfinals.
Ferrum College (17-8, 9-7) and Lynchburg earned their positions outright with the Panthers' 83-77 win over
Washington and Lee University (7-18, 5-11) locking up sixth position. Ferrum will play at Roanoke in the quarterfinals. Despite their bonus-time loss to VWU, Lynchburg's 7-9 ODAC mark could not be matched by WLU nor
Shenandoah University (10-15, 5-11) as the teams directly below them in the standings. Lynchburg will face Hampde-Sydney on Saturday.
The eighth and final position in the field also came down to tiebreakers. Shenandoah's 82-67 win over Bridgewater College combined with Washington and Lee's loss to Ferrum left both SU and WLU tied at 5-11 in the ODAC standings. The Hornets defeated the Generals in both of their ODAC matchups -- 65-52 and 67-60 -- earlier this month, awarding SU the final spot in the field. Shenandoah will travel to Ashland for a date with RMC in the quarterfinals.
