Randolph-Macon Closes Season Third in NCAA Baseball Ashland Regional

ASHLAND, Va. --- Randolph-Macon College recovered from a day one loss to Messiah University with a win over SUNY Brockport on Saturday morning, but a second win on day two eluded the Yellow Jackets, ending their season in third place in the Ashland Regional of the Division III Baseball Championship.

Randolph-Macon (31-17) finished with more than 30 wins for the third season in a row and fifth overall in program history, all under the direction of head coach Ray Hedrick. The Yellow Jackets are now 17-17 in eight Division III tournament appearances, all since 2008. They are 7-7 in the last three years including a 5-3 mark in 2024 when they made a trip to the national championship round in Eastlake, Ohio.

The start to regional competition at Estes Park did go as planned with Messiah University posting a 15-0 shutout of the Yellow Jackets, holding them to just four hits. Two big innings told the story, with Falcons crossing the plate six times in the second inning and exploding for eight runs in the ninth.

Randolph-Macon rebounded nicely on Saturday morning, staving off elimination with a 9-4 triumph over SUNY Brockport. Shortstop Alex Hagerich drove in three runs while first baseman Carter Schmitt and designated hitter Brian Fleming plated a pair each. Bere Bauers got the win, tossing 5.2 innings while allowing three runs on seven hits.

The Yellow Jackets needed one more win on Saturday to stay alive and advance to play on day three, but Methodist University pushed across the deciding run in the top of the ninth inning to post a 5-4 win and eliminate RMC from further competition. Schmitt drove in two runs for the second straight game. He and third baseman Zach Wernoski had a pair of hits.
