UPDATE (6/4/25 at 6:10 p.m. ET): Inclement weather has washed out the second day of competition in the championship series. Game two is now slated for 12:00 p.m. ET on Thursday (6/5). Should VWU win, the third and deciding game would follow later that day.
BLOOMINGTON, Va. --- Virginia Wesleyan University opened the championship series of the Division III Softball Championship with its most lopsided loss of the season as Trine University took game one, 8-1, on Tuesday at Inspiration Field on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University.
The Marlins worst two losses in 2025 have come in their last two games, previously falling to ODAC mate Randolph-Macon College, 6-2, in the semifinals, before recovering for a finals-clinching 3-1 triumph in a second meeting on Sunday.
That's just how the results go when you face the best competition in the country. Virginia Wesleyan (49-5-1) has won by seven or more runs five times during their 10-game NCAA postseason experience, outscoring their opponents, 68-26, overall. Trine (45-5) has yet to lose in nine Division III tournament games this year, out-slugging its opposition, 67-17.
Virginia Wesleyan was first on the scoreboard on Tuesday.
Sarah Prosser led off the game with a single down the left-field line. Two batters later, she advanced to third on a double to left-center by
Laci Campbell.
Morgan Tucker followed with a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Prosser.
VWU put two runners on base in the second inning via a leadoff single by
Olivia Knight and
Julia Piotrowski reaching on an error at first base, but both were left stranded.
That would be the final time more than one Marlin would reach base in any inning with Trine taking control thereafter. The Thunder scored twice in the second and fourth innings before doubling their tally with four runs in the sixth.
Trine starter Alexis Michon improved to 25-1 in a full shift. She allowed the Marlins run on five hits without a walk and three strikeouts. VWU's
Lauren Bible also went the distance, giving up eight runs on seven hits with one walk and four punchouts.
