Generals Return to the Top of the ODAC Women's Volleyball Poll

WLU Earns Maximum Amount of Points

FOREST, Va. — Washington and Lee University's run to the national quarterfinals a season ago combined with the squad it features in 2025 has led conference coaches to award the Generals the maximum amount of points in a return to the top of the ODAC Women's Volleyball Preseason Poll.

The Generals collected each of 11 first place votes they could on the way to 121 points to headline the annual survey. Virginia Wesleyan University squarely hit the century mark to sit second, while Bridgewater College is just three tallies back in third. The University of Lynchburg garnered the remaining first place vote towards 90 points in fourth position.

In the sections below, we look back to the 2024 season to set the tone for this year and then dive into some features of ODAC women's volleyball for the upcoming 2025 campaign.

    • For the second straight year, seven the of the ODAC's 13 squads posted .500 or better winning percentages
      • Those seven teams went 146-66 (.689)
      • Washington and Lee set ODAC non-COVID shortened records for winning percentage (.921) and win-loss record (35-3) while tying its own ODAC record for wins in a season (2003)
    • Washington and Lee ran the ODAC table with a 12-0 record to earn the top seed in the eight-team ODAC Tournament
      • Virginia Wesleyan, Bridgewater, Lynchburg, Guilford, Randolph-Macon, Roanoke, and Averett comprised the remainder of the bracket

    • Washington and Lee won its second straight and ODAC-record 20th league women's volleyball title
      • The Generals have appeared in four of the past five ODAC title matches, winning on each occasion; overall, WLU is 20-of-26 in championship matches
      • The Marlins appeared in their fourth title match, each since 2015; they won the program's lone trophy in 2019
    • ODAC champion Washington and Lee earned the league's automatic bid into the Division III championship bracket
    • Runner-up Virginia Wesleyan joined WLU in the field of 64 teams as an at-large qualifier from the NCAA's new NPI selection protocol
    • Virginia Wesleyan started play at top-ranked and two-time defending national champion Juniata College

      • 2nd Round: Juniata def. VWU, 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-16)
    • Washington and Lee opened NCAA competition at perennial power Christopher Newport University

      • 3rd Round: WLU def. CNU, 3-0 (27-25, 25-19, 25-15)
    • The final eight teams in the country advanced to Salem, Va., and Roanoke College's Cregger Center for competition in the final three rounds of the event
      • WLU was joined by Emory University, Hope College, Johns Hopkins University, Juniata, University of La Verne, University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater
      • Quarterfinals: Hope def. WLU, 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-20)
    • Washington and Lee's quarterfinals berth marked the program's best showing ever and the second run to the quarterfinals for an ODAC team, joining Randolph-Macon's 2015 squad
    • The Generals are now 10-17 (.370) in 17 appearances
    • ODAC schools are 21-36 (.368) in 36 overall berths
    • AVCA/TARAFLEX Preseason Division III Women's Volleyball Poll
      • The AVCA released its annual preseason coaches poll on August 19
      • Two ODAC squads are mentioned in the initial round of voting
        • Washington and Lee kicks off the season slotted ninth in the country with 1,294 points
        • Virginia Wesleyan is one of 25 squads to receive votes outside the top-25; the Marlins garnered 50 points
      • Three-time national champion Juniata College collected 79 first place votes and 2,133 points to lead the poll ahead of 2024 runner-up Wisconsin-Whitewater with four top nods and 1,965 tallies
  • The 2025 season will be a great opportunity for new ODAC players to take home awards. Just nine of the 24 stars that earned All-ODAC honors in 2024 are back for another run. That includes just three members of the first team and one of the second team. Five of the eight honorees on the third team are back on league courts.

    Two of the special award winners return this season including ODAC Rookie of the Year, outside Allison Lach from Randolph-Macon College. She was also an All-ODAC Third Team honoree. Washington and Lee mentor Bryan Snyder holds the Generals reins for a 26th season in 2025. He collected his 12th ODAC Coach of the Year plaque last season and welcomes back a league-best three All-ODAC honorees from his 2024 squad that earned a spot in the Division III quarterfinals. Snyder has won 650 career matches at Washington and Lee and is just nine victories shy of 700 for his career. His 691 wins enter the 2025 campaign as the seventh-most of active Division III coaches.

    • ODAC teams get underway with a series of non-conference matches and tournaments weekend of Friday-Sunday, August 29-31
    • The first set of conference matches are slated for Wednesday, September 10, kicking off a full single round-robin (11 matches) schedule for all league teams
