ODAC Football Report: Week 2

Three Remain Unbeaten Following 4-4 Weekend

Eight of the ODAC's nine football programs were active in Saturday contests with Gallaudet the only outfit idle on a scheduled bye. Conference teams went 4-4 in the final week of full non-conference play, leaving three schools – Hampden-Sydney, Roanoke, Shenandoah – unbeaten at 2-0 atop the league table.

  • Hampden-Sydney held on late to earn a 38-31 shootout victory over Washington & Jefferson College in one of just two ODAC home contests. The Tigers are now 2-0.
  • Guilford and Shenandoah won by a combined three points with the Quakers posting a 42-40 triumph at Methodist University to improve to 1-1 and the Hornets scoring late before running out the clock on a 29-28 result at Geneva College (Pa.).
  • Roanoke is 2-0 in its first season since 1942, now owning its first road win with a 32-22 victory at Greensboro College thanks to a strong second half.
  • Randolph-Macon forced three turnovers, but the Yellow Jackets failed to put points on the board for the first time since 2008 with a tight 10-0 road loss at Central College (Iowa).
  • Bridgewater and Washington and Lee were also on the road with Eagles staying close early against the nationally fourth-ranked Riverhawks before falling, 56-17, at Susquehanna University. The Generals led early, but came up on the wrong side of a three-point margin with a 24-21 loss at Wittenberg University.
  • Averett joined H-SC as week two hosts, but the home field advantage was not enough to help the Cougars in their 46-14 loss to Southern Virginia University.

  • JAVIER WALDRON | ROANOKE | DB
Waldron, a sophomore from Fort Mill, S.C., helped Roanoke move to 2-0 on the season as part of a strong defensive effort in the Maroons 32-22 road victory at Greensboro College on Saturday afternoon. Waldron made seven tackles from his defensive back position including four solo stops. But it was in the turnover game where his presence was most felt with a pair of takeaways including the first of two on the Pride's first two possessions of the game. With Greensboro deep in Roanoke territory on the game's first possession, it was Waldron that won a corner-pass jump ball battle. He tracked back to meet the Pride's receiver and hauled in the would-be scoring throw in the back of the end zone to thwart a Greensboro first-drive touchdown. Then in the fourth quarter, Waldron helped supply Roanoke the cushion it needed with a second interception at the outset of the final stanza. He adjusted quickly to a pass off a receiver's hand to pull in the loose ball, which he then returned 20 yards to the Greensboro 10-yard line. The Maroons' offense turned that takeaway into points on the next play for a 32-15 lead. Through the first two weeks of the season, Waldron has registered 10 tackles and three interceptions, the latter ranking third in the ODAC.

  • SHANE SHAPIRO | GUILFORD | WR
Shapiro, a junior from Jacksonville, N.C., put together a career receiving day as Guilford improved to 1-1 on the young campaign with a 42-40 road win at Methodist University on Saturday evening. Shapiro hauled in 14 passes for 210 yards and touchdowns to go with a pair of rushes for nine yards to give him 219 all-purpose yards. Shapiro's 210 yards are the sixth-most in GC history, the most in the ODAC since former Emory & Henry University standout Derrick Yates registered 265 yards in 2019, and the third-most in Division III so far this season. Shapiro's 14 catches are tied for the seventh most in Quakers history, the most in the ODAC since 2019 when Shenandoah's Jake Wallace made 15 receptions and Hampden-Sydney's Major Morgan pulled in 14 passes, and tied for the second-most in Division III this year. Shapiro caught both of his touchdown passes in the second quarter on Saturday as part of the Quakers' 28-0 run to start the game. His first came on a 12-yard pass from Luke Hyatt with 8:48 and a 21-0 lead showing on the scoreboard. Two possessions later, Guilford's drive lasted just two plays and Shapiro and Hyatt connected on a 65-yard scoring play marking the third-longest catch-and-run in the ODAC this season. Following the first two weeks of the season, Shapiro leads the ODAC in receptions (19) and receiving yards (254).

  • JOSEPH GONZALEZ | HAMPDEN-SYDNEY | RB/KR
Gonzalez, a senior from Spotsylvania, Va., was arguably the most dynamic and anticipated ball-carrier on Saturday in Hampden-Sydney as part of a 38-31 shootout victory for the Tigers over Washington & Jefferson College. Gonzalez returned six kickoffs for 193 yards to go with 20 yards on four carries for 213 all-purpose yards. His 193 return yards are the second-most in Division III this season, but could have been more if not for a penalty wiping out a potential 91-yard touchdown and a toe on the sideline leaving him with a 51-yard third-quarter return instead of a second sprint to paydirt that would have covered 88 yards. Still, that 51-yard burst set up H-SC's offense with a short field on the way to a four-play touchdown drive. Gonzalez's returns covered 45, 31, 19, 27, 51, and 20 yards, good for a 32.2 average. For the season, Gonzalez leads the ODAC in return yards (251) and average (31.4 - minimum 2 returns/game). Those numbers rank fourth and 16th, respectively, in Division III.
