ODAC Football Report: Week 3

Running Games Rule in First Week of Conference Play

We officially entered conference play in Week Three with ODAC games featuring for eight ODAC teams each week for the remainder of the season. The trend this week favored the rushing attacks as each winning team's ground game featured considerable advantages in rushing yardages as well as time of possession.

  • Hampden-Sydney made no mistake about its intention to lift an ODAC trophy at the end of the year by posting a 42-7 win over visiting Shenandoah. The Tigers – who received votes towards the latest D3football.com Top-25 Poll – are now 3-0 joining idle Roanoke (2-0) as the only unbeaten teams remaining in the ODAC. H-SC ran for 443 yards against SU, which heavily contributed to more than 37 minutes of possession time and 37 more run plays than the Hornets.
  • Gallaudet was victorious in its first ODAC game with the Bison registering a 39-30 triumph over visiting Averett. GU led early, only to see the Cougars take the lead early in the second quarter and hold it through much of the third quarter. Two late Bison TDs in that frame gave them a lead they would not surrender despite both teams putting points on the board in the fourth quarter. GU out-gained AU, 249-37, on the ground.
  • Randolph-Macon – which was receiving votes towards the D3football.com Top-25 Poll – returned to the win column with a 27-3 road victory at Bridgewater. The Yellow Jackets held the ball for more than 35 minutes and limited the Eagles to just 150 yards of offense. RMC held BC to zero yards rushing while churning out 195 yards itself.
  • In Saturday's latest contest, Washington and Lee used the friendly confines of Wilson Field to pick up its first win via a 35-7 triumph over visiting Guilford. The Generals joined Hampden-Sydney in rushing for more than 400 yards (423), leading to nearly 37 minutes of possession time and 17 more plays run (80-63) than the Quakers.

  • DAWSON ETHINGTON | GALLAUDET | LB
Ethington, a junior from Baltimore, Md., was a menace on defense in helping Gallaudet claim a 39-30 victory over Averett in the Bison's first ODAC league game. The win also evened GU's record at 1-1 following a bye last week. Ethington was on the spot for a game-high 13 tackles including 10 solo stops. The majority of his tackles occurred within three yards of the line of scrimmage, while also got into the backfield twice. On back-to-back plays, Ethington registered a solo sack and a stop for a one-yard gain in the second quarter deep in GU territory that helped limit Averett to a 28-yard field goal. • TERRY HICKS | HAMPDEN-SYDNEY | RB
Hicks, a junior from Clayton, N.C., was the driving force behind Hampden-Sydney's fast start in the Tigers 42-7 home win over Shenandoah to kickoff ODAC play. Hicks' last touchdown came just 25-seconds before halftime on a 7-yard run to close out a 13-play 92-yard drive. Green returned four kickoffs for 118 yards over the course of the game.
