ODAC Football Report: Week 4

Margins of Victory High for ODAC Winners

Points aplenty dotted the ODAC scoreboards with league teams combining for 220 points in four conference games. The margins of victory were also hefty with the triumphant programs winning by 55, 27, 24, and 18 points,

  • Bridgewater found the win column for the first time this fall with a 41-14 victory in the confines of Averett's Frank R. Campbell Stadium. The Eagles produced 31 unanswered points to open the game, keeping the Cougars from changing their scoreboard point total until 6:17 showed on the third quarter clock.
  • Hampden-Sydney, which debuted this past week at #25 in the AFCA Division III Coaches Poll Presented by Hudl and was joined by Randolph-Macon in receiving votes towards the D3football.com top-25, remains unbeaten through four weeks of action. The Tigers spoiled Guilford's homecoming game with a 69-14 win in Greensboro, improving H-SC's record to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference games. The Tigers have outscored their first two ODAC opponents, 111-21.
  • Randolph-Macon joined Bridgewater as teams that boasted more than 37 minutes of possession time in the Yellow Jackets 24-6 home win over Washington and Lee. RMC scored the only points of the first half – two first quarter touchdowns – and then tallied another TD at the outset of the fourth quarter before the Generals found the painted turf for their lone score of the game midway through the final frame.
  • Roanoke returned from a scheduled bye to compete in and win its first-ever ODAC contest with a 38-14 home victory over Gallaudet in Salem. The Maroons spotted themselves a big advantage by scoring the first 17 points of the game before the Bison got on the scoreboard just 57 ticks before halftime. RC is now 3-0 in its first varsity season since 1942.

  • LANE SHOEMAKER | ROANOKE | LB
Shoemaker, a sophomore from Roanoke, Va., helped the Maroons capture their first-ever ODAC victory in their first-ever ODAC game by limiting visiting Gallaudet University to 236 yards of total offense in Roanoke's 38-14 win in Salem on Saturday. Shoemaker accounted for two of RC's three takeaways while adding four tackles (3 solo) including a tackle for a loss. Lane's first interception came midway through the opening quarter as the Bison entered into Maroons' territory. Shoemaker grabbed the ball at the 40-yard line and returned it for what the Roanoke-faithful thought was a pick-six, only for an illegal blocking penalty to negate the 70-yard sprint. Shoemaker's second interception came early in the second quarter when he “played centerfield” on a deep fly pattern down the seam. He hauled in the errant throw at the 25-yard line, which started an 11-play 75-yard touchdown drive that saw the Maroons increase their lead to 17-0. For the season, Shoemaker has notched 15 tackles (10 solo) with three interceptions, which is tied for second in the ODAC with teammate Javier Waldron.

  • CARTER SIDO | HAMPDEN-SYDNEY | QB
Sido, a senior from Dallas, Texas, may have only played in the first two quarters of Hampden-Sydney's 69-14 road win at Guilford, but his impression on the game influential as he tossed a career-high six touchdown passes to set the tone early as the Tigers scored the program's most points since dropping 70 on Greensboro College in 2022. Sido made just one mistake of his 17 pass attempts, but he made up for that interception with 276 yards through the air and half of his 12 completions resulting in touchdowns. The six TD throws are tied for eighth in the ODAC record book as the third highest output in league history behind two players with eight scoring passes and five with seven. The latter group includes former Tiger signal-callers J.D. Ricca and Travis Lane, who accomplished their feats in 2005 and 2011, respectively. Sido connected with four players on passing touchdowns with three going to Mason Cunningham – including a 92-yard catch-and-run across the field in the second quarter – and one each to Jordan Jackson, Manning Lasso, and Tyler Hendley. In addition to the 92-yarder, Sido and Cunningham's TD plays covered nine and 20 yards. Jackson's touchdown reception was a 4-yard effort, while Lasso's went for six yards and Hendley's covered 24 yards. For the season, Sido leads the ODAC in touchdown passes (14), efficiency rating (192.1), total offensive yardage (980), and offensive yards per game (245.0). He is second in yards (884), yards per game (221), and completion percentage (56.6).

  • BEN BERMUDEZ | BRIDGEWATER | PK
Bermudez, a junior from Virginia Beach, Va., registered 11 points as he was perfect on seven kicks in helping Bridgewater post its first win of the season with a 41-14 victory at Averett. Bermudez converted all five of his extra point attempts and buried a pair of field goals in his first game as the Eagles primary kicker. He bookended the game with those latter kicks, splitting the uprights from 29 yards for the game's first three points midway through the first quarter and then adding a 36-yard field goal for the game's final tallies with 6:13 to play in the fourth frame. That last boot marks the longest in the ODAC so far this season.
