ODAC Men's Basketball Report: Week 12

ODAC teams featured in 12 conference games with some interesting results over the weather-adjusted schedule. Virginia Wesleyan had arguably the most impactful week with a last-second victory over No. 5 Randolph-Macon highlighting the Marlins' two victories. No. 22 Roanoke also won twice, as did Shenandoah in a big week for the Hornets with their first league wins of the season. VWU stands atop the table at 6-1 with RMC at 7-2 and both RC and Washington and Lee at 7-2. Randolph-Macon (15-2) owns the most overall wins in the conference.

  • RIVAL AXSELLE | GUILFORD | GUARD
    Axselle, a senior from Mechanicsville, Va., helped Guilford to a 1-1 showing against ODAC competition last week, keeping the Quakers firmly in the mix for an ODAC Tournament spot as the league table starts to take shape. In a 76-57 win over Averett, Axselle notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds (6 defensive). He also came away with a pair of steals. In a 104-97 setback to Shenandoah, Axselle scored four points with four boards (2 defensive) while adding four steals and a pair of blocked shots to his defensive effort. For the season, Axselle is averaging 10.0 points and 5.7 rebounds. He is third in the ODAC in blocked shots (18) and sixth in steals (26).

  • OMARI DeVEAUX | VIRGINIA WESLEYAN | GUARD
    DeVeaux, a graduate student from Henrico, Va., had two big games for very different reasons as Virginia Wesleyan claimed top spot (6-1) in the ODAC table with wins over No. 5 Randolph-Macon (65-64) and at EMU (60-44). Against RMC, DeVeaux came up big in the clutch not once but twice. He hit a game-tying three-pointer with 32-seconds to play and then, after the Yellow Jackets retook the lead, he drilled a double-clutched three-pointer for a 65-64 lead with 0.4 on the clock. DeVeaux finished with a game-high 18 points to go with four boards and a pair of assists. He was 7-of-15 from the field including 3-of-6 from deep. At EMU, DeVeaux went 9-of-13 from the floor and 7-of-10 from the stripe on the way to 28 points. He made 3-of-5 shots from beyond the arc and pulled down 10 boards for his first double-double of the season. He also chipped in two assists and two steals. For the season, DeVeaux is second in the ODAC in scoring (21.1) and averages 4.8 rebounds per game. He is fifth in free throw shooting (.796, 78-of-98) and 13th in assists (42).

    • Averett guard Jackson Sellars averaged 13.5 points and 6.5 rebounds with 6 assists and 3 blocked shots in the Cougars 1-1 week.
    • Guilford forward Ke Edwards averaged 14.5 points and 3.5 rebounds with 6 steals in the Quakers 1-1 showing.
    • Hampden-Sydney forward Shane Fernald averaged 15.0 points and 5.5 rebounds with 5 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocked shots in the Tigers' 1-1 week.
    • Roanoke guard Jackson Bell averaged 19.0 points and 9.5 rebounds with 2 assists and 2 steals in the No. 22 Maroons' 2-0 week.
    • Shenandoah guard Dorian Davis averaged 21.5 points and 6.5 assists with 4 steals and 2 blocked shots in the Hornets' 2-0 week; he posted a career-high 30 points in a win over Guilford.
