ODAC Traditional Equestrian Returns to Lexington

Four Schools Set to Compete at the Virginia Horse Center

FOREST, Va. --- The ODAC is doubling-up on its first successful traditional equestrian championship during a fall season with a second on Friday. For the second time in as many years, the conference will conduct its annual traditional equestrian championship in October with this season's event set for Friday at 8:30 a.m. ET. The Lexington-based Virginia Horse Center hosts this show for the third straight season and fourth time since 2022.

Scoring for the ODAC championship differs from that of regular IHSA shows where riders are split into two or three separate sections for competition. The ODAC event features teams of four riders using their own horses. In IHSA shows, competing riders must use horses provided by the host.

The ODAC Championship features two jumping rounds -- Equitation Over Fences -- which form the basis for All-ODAC consideration. Two judges score each rider during the fences rounds with averages taken for each. From a team perspective, the low average of the four riders will be dropped with the three remaining riders cumulatively forming that team's score for that session.

The third round of competition -- Equitation on the Flat -- focuses on two appointed riders per school. Those riders will follow the commands given by the judges and will be awarded a score based on several factors surrounding the judges' directions. Both riders' scores are counted and applied to the team's overall total to determine which school lifts the ODAC trophy.

Since March 2023, every piece of ODAC equestrian hardware has made its way to the Hill City. The University of Lynchburg has won each of the past four traditional championships with the now three-time NCEA single discipline champions have lifted the first three ODAC single discipline trophies.

Last year, the Hornets' margin of victory over second place Bridgewater College was only two points after three sessions at the Virginia Horse Center. Lynchburg posted 16 total points to the Eagles 14, who were tightly followed by Washington and Lee University with 13 markers. Sweet Briar College slotted fourht with 11 points, and Hollins University rounded out the event's scoring with nine tallies.

Four of those five schools are back for Friday's affair. Hollins will not be in attendance.
