ODAC Men's Soccer Report: Week 8

All 12 games for ODAC teams were conference affairs last week. Batten and Randolph-Macon were the big winners, picking up six points in the league table with a pair of victories each. There is just one game remaining for all teams and the logjam for the eight tournament positions is real with as many as 10 teams still mathematically eligible. No. 6 Lynchburg (11-1-4, 5-0-3) and Bridgewater (10-3-3, 5-0-3) are on 18 points atop the ODAC standings with RMC (8-3-2, 5-2-1) just two back. No. 18 Washington and Lee (10-2-3, 4-1-3) and Shenandoah (7-3-6, 4-1-3) have earned 15 points as they vie for a top-4 position and hosting rights in Saturday's quarterfinals.

  • ZANE KOWALSKI | BRIDGEWATER | GOALKEEPER
Kowalski, a sophomore from Midland, N.C., collects his second ODAC weekly award of the season after helping Bridgewater remain atop the ODAC table following a 1-0-1 week against conference competition. In a 1-1 draw at No. 18 Washington and Lee on Wednesday, Kowalski came up with six saves over his 90-minute shift. On Saturday, Kowalski made just two saves in a second full shift in a 1-0 shutout of Hampden-Sydney. His second save came in the final second as a long ball towards BC's box eluded an Eagles' defender and onto an oncoming Tigers' winger. He got there first, but a hard-charging Kowalski made himself big and clear away any chance of a last-second equalizer. Bridgewater is now 10-3-3 overall and 5-0-3 for 18 points in the ODAC table, tied with No. 6 Lynchburg for first. For the season, Kowalski leads the ODAC in goals against average (0.58) and save percentage (.851). He has made 40 stops and registered four clean sheets.

Rodriguez was responsible for both of the Hornets' goals in a 2-0 win at EMU on Wednesday. He notched the opener just 2:47 from the first whistle via an unassisted effort. He then made it 2-0 SU by converting a penalty kick in the 59th minute. On Saturday in a six-goal thriller against Randolph College, Rodriguez was again on the mark twice in a 3-3 draw with the WildCats. Both of Rodriguez's goals came from the 12-meter mark as he converted a PK for the contests' first goal in the ninth minute and he made it 3-1 Hornets in the 53rd minute. Shenandoah is now 7-3-6 overall and 4-13 in ODAC play to put them on 15 points, tied with No. 18 Washington and Lee for fourth in the standings and in the mix for a possible hosting nod in Saturday's upcoming ODAC quarterfinals.
