FOREST, Va. --- Changes in the ODAC table were abundant on Wednesday evening with each of Wednesday's six final matchups impacting the eight-team field now determined for the upcoming ODAC Men's Soccer Tournament.
Nationally 11th-ranked
University of Lynchburg (12-1-4 overall, 6-0-3 ODAC) posted a 4-1 win over Randolph College to secure the top-seed in the bracket. The Hornets' position was the only thing clear among the top-four seeds with a three-way tie for second triggered by Wednesday's results between
Bridgewater College (10-4-3, 5-13),
Shenandoah University (8-3-6, 5-1-3), and nationally 19th-ranked
Washington and Lee University (11-2-3, 5-1-3).
Head-to-head results could not be used as SU and WLU did not face each other in ODAC play during the regular season. That sent the stalemate to the second step in the league's tiebreaker protocols, the ODAC Five-Point Tiebreaker. Points in multiples of five were awarded for each team's wins (or halved if tied) in conference play with the additional stipulation that all three teams had played the opponent. There were four common opponents between the three outfits with the Eagles securing the most points and earning the No. 2 seed followed by the Hornets as the third seed, and the Generals in fourth position.
Randolph-Macon College (9-3-3, 5-2-2) is slotted fifth following its 1-1 draw with
Batten University (4-5-8, 3-2-4) on Wednesday night. The Yellow Jackets will travel to WLU on Saturday to open tournament play. The RMC-BATN result combined with
Hampden-Sydney College's (11-4-2, 4-4-1) 3-1 victory over EMU on Wednesday left the Marlins and Tigers in a tie for sixth. The two met in a non-conference tilt in September, but that 3-1 Batten win does not apply to ODAC tiebreakers. Therefore, this tie also was solved by the ODAC Five-Point Tiebreaker. They featured eight common opponents with Batten finishing with more points to earn the sixth seed and a trip to SU on Saturday. The Tigers will play as the seventh seed and play at Bridgewater in the quarterfinals.
Guilford College (4-7-5, 3-3-3) earned a tie with Roanoke College on Wednesday to cap the eight-team field. The Quakers will travel to Lynchburg to begin their tournament experience.
