ODAC Softball Report: Week 5

ODAC teams took part in 32 games overall with six conference doubleheaders among them. Bridgewater and Shenandoah are both 4-0 in early league outings with nationally top-ranked Virginia Wesleyan and Lynchburg at 2-0. Roanoke and Sweet Briar are both 2-2. All six of those squads are among the nine league programs with .500 or better overall winning percentages. The Marlins lead that crew with an 18-0 mark with the Eagles (16-4) and Shenandoah (15-3) also starting out with strong winning margins. No. 24 Randolph-Macon improved to 11-9 which included a sweep of No. 15 Christopher Newport.

  • EVELYN RHOADS | BRIDGEWATER
    Rhoads, a sophomore from Hiwassee, Va., turned in a near blemish-free pair of starts in posting a pair of seven-inning shutouts where she allowed just four hits with a .085 opponents' batting average. On Saturday, Rhoads went the distance in a 3-0 triumph over Averett. She faced five batters over the minimum in allowing three hits with one walk and one HBP. She struck out one Cougar with 10 ground ball outs. She retired six straight batters through the middle innings and closed the game by sitting down the last five batters in a row. Then on Sunday, Rhoads tossed a one-hit gem in a 3-0 victory over Gettysburg College. She retired the first 13 Bullets she faced with an error breaking up a perfect-game bid with one down in the fifth. She gave up her lone hit to leadoff the seventh inning. Rhoads struck out six batters. For the season, Rhoads is 7-1 with a 0.86 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 56.2 innings of work.

  • TAYLOR McQUEEN | VIRGINIA WESLEYAN | CATCHER
    McQueen, a junior from Clayton, N.C., was near-perfect in nationally top-ranked Virginia Wesleyan's 4-0 week by going 8-for-8 from the dish and catching three of the Marlins' four shutouts. McQueen posted a 1.000/1.000/2.000 slash line with two doubles, two homers, a walk, six RBI, six runs scored, and three stolen bases. In a sweep (7-0, 12-0) of Mary Washington, McQueen went 4-for-4 with a homer in each game. She also doubled in game one and drove in five runs while scoring four times. In an ODAC sweep (10-0, 12-0) of EMU, McQueen went 4-for-4 with three stolen bases, an RBI, and two runs scored. She doubled in game two. For the season, McQueen is hitting .500 with a 1.418 OPS. She has homered four times with 22 RBI and 10 walks with zero strikeouts.
