ODAC Softball Report: Week 8

Conference teams featured in a monster set of ODAC series with 14 league doubleheaders dominating the schedule with three non-league series for a total of 34 games. Nationally top-ranked Virginia Wesleyan went 6-0 to improve to a Division III-best 32-0. The Marlins have outscored their opponents, 319-25, in all games. Shenandoah (24-6) also went 6-0 with four wins in-league to improve to 9-3 in the conference table. While VWU is 14-0, Lynchburg (21-11) is currently second at 10-2 following a 4-2 week. Bridgewater (23-9) went 4-2 as well and now sits fourth in the ODAC at 10-4.

  • EMMA ADAMS | VIRGINIA WESLEYAN
    Adams, a senior from Winterville, N.C., earns her first ODAC weekly award of the season after going 3-0 without allowing a run over 14.0 total innings. Adams, the 2024 ODAC Pitcher of the Year, opened her week by working the first three frames of Virginia Wesleyan's 13-0 win over Meredith in five innings in game two of the Marlins' doubleheader sweep of the Avenging Angels. She did not allow a baserunner and fanned four. Adams then went the distance in VWU's 4-0 win over Averett in game two of the Marlins' ODAC sweep of the Cougars on Saturday. She allowed just one hit – a single to lead off the seventh inning – while facing just 23 batters. She struck out eight batters and retired 18 of the first 20 hitters she faced with errors accounting for the two baserunners. Adams closed her week on Sunday with four innings of shutout ball in VWU's 9-1 win over Guilford in five innings in game two of the Marlins sweep of the Quakers. She allowed two hits and struck out four. For the season, Adams is an ODAC second-best 15-0 with a conference-leading 0.20 ERA in 71.0 innings in the circle. She has struck out 62 and walked just three batters. The opposition is hitting just .156 off her.

  • CADENCE RIEG | SHENANDOAH | RIGHT FIELD
    Rieg, a sophomore from Winchester, Va., was an offensive juggernaut in helping Shenandoah rattled off a 6-0 week including a non-conference sweep of Mary Washington (9-1, 4-2) and ODAC road sweeps of Lynchburg (11-7, 6-5) and Sweet Briar (11-5, 5-1). Rieg, the Hornets two-batter, went 12-for-18 with a 1.760 OPS powered by six doubles with seven RBI, five runs scored, seven walks, and a stolen base. Against UMW, Rieg went a combined 4-for-5 with three RBI, a pair of walks, and a run scored. She doubled once in game one and added a pair of two-baggers in game two. At Lynchburg, Rieg went 6-for-7 with two RBI, two runs scored, and two walks. She notched her second two-double outing in game two. At Sweet Briar, Rieg went 2-for-6 with two RBI, two runs scored, and three walks. She stole a base in game one and doubled in game two. For the season, Rieg is fourth in the ODAC in batting (.459), OPS (1.220), OBP (.526), and doubles (11). She is sixth in fifth in triples (3) and sixth in RBI (30) and SLG (.694).

Cadence Rieg
