ODAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament Field Set

Generals Earn Top Seed, Three Ties Dot Eight-Team Bracket

FOREST, Va. --- When play began on Wednesday, there were only two positions in the ODAC Women’s Lacrosse Tournament field that were known – Guilford College as the eighth seed and Washington and Lee University continuing its dominance as the top seed in the eight-team bracket.

Three of the four conference games scheduled for the last day of the regular season had impacts on the final league table. Tiebreakers were called into action three times, the extent of their usage unknown until all the results went final.

The Generals (13-3 overall, 8-0 in ODAC play), ranked sixth in Division III in the latest IWLCA coaches poll, posted their 12th straight unbeaten conference schedule to claim the regular season title. They are 105-0 in official ODAC games (non-tournament) since 2014.

The first tiebreaker was used to determine the second and third seeds. Both Randolph-Macon College (12-5, 6-2) and Roanoke College (9-8, 6-2) (11-6, 6-2) won on Wednesday with RMC defeating Virginia Wesleyan University (9-7, 4-4) and RC defeating Shenandoah University (10-7, 5-3). Head-to-head tiebreakers solved the deadlock between Randolph-Macon and Roanoke with the Yellow Jackets’ 14-10 win during the regular season awarding them the second seed. The Maroons will play as the third seed.

Shenandoah's loss to RC on Wednesday left them at 5-3 in league play, the same record as the University of Lynchburg (12-5, 5-3) following their win over crosstown rival Randolph College. This tie was also broken via head-to-head results thanks to Lynchburg’s 14-13 victory during the regular season. Lynchburg takes up the mantle as the fourth seed, while Shenandoah is tagged as the fifth seed.

The final tie in the top-eight required a much deeper dive into the conference’s tiebreaking process. VWU and Bridgewater College (9-8, 4-4) were locked at 4-4 with the sixth seed in contention. The two programs did not play each other during the regular season, and they both featured the same results profile, rendering the ODAC’s first three common steps moot. Sport-specific measures were required to break the tie. Women’s lacrosse features four sport-specific methods with the first three – goal differential and goals allowed amongst tied teams as well as goal differential against the ODAC in official league matches (cap of 10) – not solving the equation. That left goals allowed against the ODAC in official conference games (cap of 10) as the last step before pre-drawn lots. Virginia Wesleyan’s 17-3 loss to Randolph-Macon put the Marlins’ on 53 goals allowed with the Eagles surrendering 50, lending favor to BC in the tiebreaker and the sixth seed in the field.

Bridgewater will now host seventh-seeded Virginia Wesleyan in the first round on Saturday, April 25 in a repeat of one of last season’s tournament opening matches. Lynchburg welcomes Guilford (8-8, 3-5) to the Hill City for the remaining first round matchup. The Quakers closed the regular season last Saturday, which locked them into eighth position entering Wednesday’s final matchups.

The two first-round winners will travel to No. 3 Roanoke and #4 Lynchburg for the quarterfinals on Tuesday, April 28. Those two winners head to No. 1 Washington and Lee and No. 2 Randolph-Macon for the semifinals on Friday, May 1. The championship will be hosted by the highest remaining seed on Sunday, May 3.
