ODAC Baseball Report: Week 11

  • PETER PHILIPS | RANDOLPH-MACON | SP
    Philips, a junior from Virginia Beach, Va., turned in the longest outing of his collegiate career in helping Randolph-Macon secure home-field advantage in the first round of the ODAC Tournament last week. Philips toed the rubber for game one in the Yellow Jackets sweep of Guilford, leading RMC to a 10-2 victory with eight strong innings. He was ultra efficient, tossing just 65 pitches while scattering six hits. He surrendered two runs and walked one while fanning a half-dozen. He rolled up eight ground ball outs and held the Quakers to a .214 batting average. For the season, Philips is 6-1 with one save in 12 appearances covering 56.2 innings of work. He has struck out 58 batters and walked 18.

  • MICHAEL HETZEL | ROANOKE | 1ST BASE / DH
    Hetzel, a first-year from New Kent, Va., was red hot at the dish with league weekly-highs of 11 hits and 10 RBI to help Roanoke go 3-1 overall including 2-1 in ODAC games to close the season as the eight seed entering the ODAC Tournament. Hetzel hit .733 (11-for-15) with a 2.445 OPS powered by two doubles and four homers. He opened the week with a 5-for-5 outing in the Maroons' 12-7 win over Guilford on Tuesday. He registered his first collegiate multi-homer game with two jacks on the way to driving in five runs and scoring twice. On Wednesday in a 13-3 non-conference win over Pfeiffer University, Hetzel went 2-for-3 with a walk. Both hits were doubles, and he drove in a run and scored once. In a doubleheader split (4-5, 21-2) with Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, Hetzel went a combined 4-for-7 with four RBI, two runs scored, and two walks. He homered once in each game and drove in a pair in each contest. For the season, Hetzel is tied for eighth in the ODAC in RBI (46), tied for 10th in doubles (13),  11th in batting (.397), and 14th in OPS (1.095).
