Virginia Wesleyan Advances to NCAA Softball Super Regionals

Marlins Advance to Super Regionals, Opponent TBD

Updated: 5/16/26 at 9:10 p.m. ET -- the NCAA committee will be reseeding the remaining 16 competitors once all regional sites have concluded play. Super regional matchups will be communicated on Sunday.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --- Virginia Wesleyan University is a perfect 8-of-8 in postseason play and improved to a Division III-best 48-0 with a 3-2 victory over Pfeiffer University to claim the Virginia Beach Regional title on Saturday afternoon at Broyles Field at TowneBank Park.

The Marlins move on to face an opponent to be determined. The Divison III Softball Championship Committee will meet on Sunday to determine the matchups for super regional play. Competition is set for Thursday and Friday, May 21-22.

VWU got more from Pfeiffer (40-11) than maybe many thought the Marlins would, given that they had yet to give up a run in regional action.

Virginia Wesleyan got on the board first with a single by left fielder Laci Campbell to score third baseman Olivia Knight in the bottom of the second. Pfeiffer responded in the third with first baseman Heather Vaughan singling through the left side to plate center fielder Landry Stewart.

Scoring in the third frame was not complete with VWU adding a pair in the bottom half. Designated player Alison Pollack doubled in right fielder Morgan Tucker. Catcher Taylor McQueen then came around to score an important insurance run on a wild pitch.

Pfeiffer got to VWU righty Hannah Hearl for a run in seventh, but it came with a little help from the Marlins defense. An error at third allowed Ky Perdue to score one batter later. McKnight got an immediate chance to make up for her miscue, closing the game with a clean play on a grounder for the game's final out.

Hearl went the distance to improve to 25-0. She gave up two runs (one earned) while scattering six hits. She walked one and fanned six Falcons.

Abigail Bowman took the loss for Pfeiffer, finishing her season at 19-7. She allowed three runs on five hits with a walk and one strikeout over two-plus innings.

Campbell and center fielder Sarah Prosser led VWU with two hits each. Stewart and Vaughn had two knocks for Pfeifer.
