WASHINGTON, Pa. --- Bridgewater College played eliminator for the second time on Saturday, winning the final game of the day, 9-6, over the University of Scranton to advance to the regional final of the Washington, Pennsylvania Regional as part of the Division III Baseball Championship.
The win not only avenged an earlier loss to the Royals for Bridgewater (35-14), but it puts the Eagles into a Sunday showdown for the regional title with the University of Chicago. Bridgewater must defeat the Maroons twice given that UChicago (29-13) have not yet lost in the double-elimination format. Sunday's first of two potential games is set for an 11:00 a.m. ET first pitch. Should the Eagles win, then a winner-take-all clash for the regional banner will be played roughly 45 minutes following the completion of the first game.
Bridgewater got big outings from several players against Scranton. Center fielder
Jakson Walter and designated hitter
Zack Chadwell each drove in three runs, while shortstop
Bransen Hensley went 3-for-4 with two driven in.
Righty
Lucas Cash turned in a solid outing on the hill, picking up the win to improve to 7-3. He allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. Right-handed reliever
Hunter Covill surrendered two runs on three hits over his 0.2 innings of relief. Southpaw
Matthew Bishop shut the door on the Royals, fanning six of the eight batters he faced in a hitless and scoreless 2.1 innings of work for his first save of the season.
Chadwell got things started for the Eagles in the first inning with a three run jack to right. Hensley made it 4-0 good guys with a double down the left-field line in the bottom of the second.
Scranton got on the board with a big swing of its own as left fielder John Heitzman left the yard to right-center for a three-run homer, cutting BC's lead to one after 4.5 innings.
Bridgewater responded with two in the bottom of the fifth. Walter hit a sacrifice fly to center to score catcher
T.J. Johnson. Second baseman
Nick Stavros crossed the dish on a balk by Royals' starter Krish Patel to put BC ahead, 6-3.
The Royals got one back in the sixth when third baseman Aidan Casey doubled to left-center to bring in designated hitter Vincent Napolitano. Bridgewater, however, quickly restored its lead to three runs after Hensley drove in right fielder
Trent Holland with a triple to right-center.
Scranton cut the Eagles advantage to one run with two runs in the seventh. First baseman Joey Granko grounded out to short to bring around second baseman Matthew Gannon. Right fielder Logan Mason followed with a single up the middle to plate Heitzman.
Walter pushed across a pair of nerve-settling insurance runs in the eighth. His single brought around both Stavros and Hensley to reestablish BC's three-run edge at 9-6.
Patel took the loss for Scranton, falling to 1-1 on the season. He gave up seven runs (five earned) on seven hits with zero walks and two strikeouts in 5.1 innings on the bump. Kieran Lodewick walked a pair and struck out one in a scoreless inning of relief. Mason, who moved to the rubber from right field in the seventh, tossed the final 1.2 frames for the Royals. He gave up two runs on two hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
