How It Happened
  • In the top of the first, the Nittany Lions drew a leadoff walk and used a single to get runners on the corners with one out. While RMC got the second out, a sacrifice fly from PSH gave it a 1-0 lead.
  • Randolph-Macon responded in the bottom of the fourth, as Zach Stolze (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield) got on for the second time in the game with a single up the middle. A sacrifice bunt from Jon Quici (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) moved him into scoring position and he advanced to third on a wild pickoff attempt from the pitcher. Justin Lanouette (Chantilly, Va./Freedom) did his job, as his sacrifice fly to right allowed Stolze to tag up to even the contest, 1-1.
  • In the top of the sixth, the Nittany Lions posted a solo homer to right for a 2-1 lead.
  • The four seed added on in the top of the seventh, as a single resulted in a runner on second after a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, PSH used a single into the right-center gap to establish a 3-1 edge.
  • As the first batter in the bottom of the ninth, Stolze laced a single to deep left-center field. On a full count, Quici ripped a single to left, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Lanouette got on with a fielder's choice and moved Caleb Hawton-Henley (Fairfax, Va./St. John's Prep) to third, who pinch ran for Stolze. CJ Chatterton (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) pinch hit and placed a single through the right side, driving Hawton-Henley in to cut the lead to 2-3. In the clutch, Jack Bowles (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) out-ran a ground ball to first, pushing Lanouette home to even the contest at three. Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) was intentionally walked to load the bases for Schmitt, who walked off the game with a five-pitch walk.
By The Numbers
  • Both PSH and RMC tallied eight hits, while RMC led in walks drawn, four-to-one.
  • The Yellow Jackets left one less runner on base, while leading 31-30 in at bats.
  • Seven different Yellow Jackets tallied hits, compared to five from the Nittany Lions .
  • Philips pitched a career-high 8.2 innings, giving up just three runs and eight hits. The junior finished with three strikeouts through his 26 outs.
  • Norm Cherrett (Chicago, Ill./IMG Academy) retired the only batter he faced in the top of the ninth.
  • Stolze was the only player on the Lemon and Black to tally multiple hits. Along with his two, he was hit by a pitch and scored a run.
  • In a massive pinch hitting spot, Chatterton tallied a hit and an RBI while also scoring the game-winning run.
  • Schmitt led the game with two walks, as he also had a hit and an RBI.
  • Bowles, Quici, Wernoski and Logan Duff (Forest, Va./Liberty Christian) each had a hit as well, while Lanouette had RMC's third RBI.
For the Record:
  • After singling in the first, Wernoski has now gotten on base in 25 consecutive games, with a hit in 15 of his last 16.
  • With his single in the fifth, Bowles has now reached base in each of his last 19 games.
