Shenandoah Closes Season as Runner-Up in Winchester Regional

Hornets Drop a Pair on Sunday to Messiah.

WINCHESTER, Va. --- Shenandoah University was stopped twice by Messiah University on Sunday with the Hornets dropping a pair of outings -- 4-3 and 13-0 -- to the Falcons to finish as the runner-up in the Winchester Regional of the Division III Baseball Championship.

The Hornets close the season at 37-12 while Messiah (36-13) moves on to the super regional round where they will face Baldwin Wallace University. Location -- either Grantham, Pa., or Berea, Ohio -- has not yet been announced.

Shenandoah had two shots to win the regional crown after claiming its first two games of the weekend. But Messiah came up with timely hitting in Sunday's first game and then overwhelmed the Hornets in game two to shut them out for the first time this season.

Messiah got on the board first in game one with Isaiah Parido plating Luke Ott and Matt Luchovick with a single in the second inning. The Falcons added one more in the frame when Landon Mark grounded into a double play, allowing David Martinez to score despite not registering an RBI.

SU got one back in the bottom of the inning when Dillon Mauzy left the yard with a solo shot to right. The Hornets cut Messiah's lead to 3-2 in the third inning when Adham Sahebzadah hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Chip Carver.

Nick Moyer gave the Falcons a much needed fourth tally when he singled home Cristian Reyna in the fifth.

Shenandoah pulled one run closer in the seventh. Carl Keenan doubled home Kyle Garrett with his third hit of the day, but that would be the last run of the game, leaving SU behind, 4-3.

Zachary Harris improved to 2-1 after 5.2 on the hill. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Devin Aponte picked up his third save 2.0 frames of scoreless ball, allowing one hit and walking one with one strikeout.

Michael Meyers took the loss for SU despite five solid innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits with three walks and two punchouts. Anthony Arrichiello tossed three scoreless innings of relief, giving up four hits and a walk. Jacob Gilbert retired all three batters he faced with one strikeout.

It was all Messiah in game two as the Falcons scored early and often, plating at least one run in the first six innings. That included four in the first and two each in the second and third innings to spot themselves to an 8-0 lead.

Shenandoah managed 11 hits with Jaime Padilla leading with three knocks while Garrett and Kemper Omps registered a pair. But the Hornets stranded 12 runners on-base including seven in scoring position. Messiah also threw out two baserunners at the plate to cut down would-be Hornets' runs scored.

Messiah saw three pitches take the hill with Devin Aponte getting the win, improving to 7-1 with 3.1 innings of two-hit ball. Kolten Martin threw the final four innings, giving up four hits and zero runs on the way to his first save.

Eight pitchers took the ball for Shenandoah with Gilbert starting and taking the loss, closing his season at 5-3.
