Randolph's SAAC Raises Money for Special Olympics
LYNCHBURG, Va. --- A year-long effort from
Randolph's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has resulted in a
hefty donation for local Special Olympics programs.
Doubling last year's result, this year's student-athlete group
helped raise $2,000 in 2013-14, primarily by selling concessions at
Randolph sporting events.
Each of Randolph's 17 teams participate in this annual
fundraiser.
Led by its staff representative Alexis Wagner and its president,
senior men's soccer player Jake Hood, the group has helped
grow over the last few years, including cancer awareness games this
spring.
One of the leading groups which Randolph's SAAC works with is
the Special Olympics, specifically the local branch, Special
Olympics Virginia.
The entire conference was lauded for the efforts of its member
schools in December by the charitable organizaton.
According to its mission statement, "Special Olympics
provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a
variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with
intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to
develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and
participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their
families, other Special Olympics athletes and the
community."
