Shenandoah Falls to Moravian in Second Cape Charles Bowl

SALEM, Va. --- In the 2024 Cape Charles Game the Shenandoah University football team lost 35-14 against Moravian University on Saturday night at Salem Stadium.

The Greyhounds (7-4) defense forced four turnovers and held the Hornets (8-3) to negative rushing yards in the first half. The Greyhounds nine tackles for loss in the game as well.

On Shenandoah's first two plays of the evening, Steven Hugney connected with Jaden Roberts and Bryce Buchanan for 21 total yards. Moravian stopped SU on the next two plays bringing up a fourth down. On the punt attempt, the snap went high and 32 yards behind the SU punt unit, allowing the Greyhounds to start their drive inside the red zone. The Greyhounds capitalized on the short field and scored the opening touchdown on a fourth-and-goal from six yards out.

The Hornets drove down the field inside the Greyhound 10 yard line. However, on a fourth-and-short the Hornets went for the first down but were stopped, giving Moravian the ball back.

The second quarter was all Moravian as they outscored Shenandoah 14-0 including a touchdown with under a minute left in the half. The Greyhounds also outgained the Hornets 145-23 in the frame.

Buchanan broke free for 53 yards on the opening possession of the third quarter which placed Shenandoah at the Greyhound one yard line. Following a loss of 17, Hugney found Broden Domenico wide open in the endzone for Shenandoah's first score of the game.

In the third and fourth quarters, Moravian forced three interceptions which its offense turned into a 35-7 lead.

On Shenandoah's final play of the game, AJ Maxwell rushed up the middle for an eight-yard score for the final touchdown of the season.

Steven Hugney capped off his senior year with 202 passing yards tonight while adding one passing touchdown and 20 rushing yards.

Buchanan led the Hornets with 116 yards on the ground while Maxwell rushed for 64 on the team's final drive.

Defensively, Matt Conroy contributed 13 total tackles and Sean Perry added a fourth-quarter interception. Quante Redd added two pass breakups for the Hornets' secondary.
