FOREST, Va. --- Three-time defending ODAC champion Randolph-Macon College saw 15 players all-conference recognition with Bridgewater College (12), Shenandoah University (11) and Washington and Lee University (10) each cracking double figures to highlight the 2024 All-ODAC Football Awards.
Shenandoah University mentor
Scott Yoder garnered ODAC Coach of the Year laurels from his peers. In addition to 11 Hornets earning all-league spots, SU quarterback
Steven Hugney doubles as the J. Stokely Fulton Offensive Player of the Year and the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year. WLU linebacker
Jalen Todd received Lou Wacker Defensive Player of the Year distinction, and Averett University corner
Joziah Campbell was tabbed the ODAC Rookie of the Year.
A total of 71 standouts earned All-ODAC recognition with 27 appearing on an All-ODAC Team for at least the second straight season. That includes eight members each of this year's All-ODAC First Team offensive and defensive units. Randolph-Macon offensive lineman
Storm James and kicker
Kyle Ihle repeat as offensive first-team choices, while SU lineman
David Munoz and WLU running back
Jacob Romero also fulfill that moniker. WLU lineman
Harrison Donovan moved up from the second team, while SU's Hugney along with his favorite target
Broden Domenico and Bridgewater all-purpose back
Brendan Robinson made the leap from the 2023 third team.
Defensively, RMC lineman
Wade Grubbs and linebacker
Tony Skinner are joined by SU linebacker
Matt Conroy and WLU lineman
Will Mahmud as repeat first team honorees. All four first team defensive backs appeared on a 2023 awards team. RMC corner
Coleton Payne and WLU safety
Jack Johnson moved up from the second team, while SU corner
Sean Perry and WLU safety
Charlie Fleming climbed the ladder from the third team.
Hugney, a senior from Fairfax Station, Va., shines on and off the field for Shenandoah. In the classroom, Hugney maintains a 3.991 grade point average as a data science and applied mathematics and computer science double major. The soon-to-be four-time ODAC All-Academic Team honoree has previously earned Academic All-State and CSC Academic All-District recognition. He has completed two internships with Strider Technologies, one each of the past two summers.
On the field, Hugney -- a Hornets team captain -- is now a three-time All-ODAC honoree, combining this year's first team selection with a pair of third team nods. A dual-threat quarterback, Hugney went 173-of-286 (60.5%) through the air for an ODAC-best 2,306 yards and 19 touchdowns against 13 interceptions. He averaged 206.0 yards per game and boasted a 141.1 efficiency rating. On the ground, Hugney carried the ball 90 times for 413 yards and six touchdowns. He will graduate 699-of-1207 passing for 8,348 yards and 66 touchdowns against 39 interceptions. He racked up 1,101 yards and 16 touchdowns on 276 carries.
Todd, a senior from Louisville, Ky., was a tackling machine for the Washington and Lee defense, paving his way to a first All-ODAC selection. His 124 tackles are currently tied for fourth-most in Division III and more than double his previous career-high (61 in 2023). He leads the ODAC in assisted stops (84) and slots fourth in solo tackles (40). He finished with 5.5 tackles for loss including 3.5 quarterback sacks. Todd notched 10 or more tackles in five games this season including a career-best 22 stops at Guilford. That currently stands as the second-most tackles in a single-game in Division III this year. Todd will graduate having made 297 tackles (116 solo) with 16.5 TFLs and 7.5 sacks.
Yoder recently completed his 12th season guiding the Shenandoah football program. This is his first ODAC top coaching honor. The Hornets finished the regular season at 8-2 overall and 5-2 in league play. Their win over Washington and Lee in Week 11 propelled them to second place on tiebreakers over the Generals, marking SU's best finish in football since joining the ODAC in 2012-13. Shenandoah's finish afforded them one of two ODAC places in the second edition of the Chesapeake Challenge bowl series. While they dropped that contest to Moravian College, the Hornets' eight-win campaign marks their second in three seasons. Yoder currently owns a 64-52 (.552) career record, all at Shenandoah.
Campbell, a first-year from Dumfries, Va., combines the ODAC Rookie of the Year award with a selection to the All-ODAC Third Team. Campbell currently leads the ODAC interceptions with six, tied for fifth-most in Division III. While he did not return any of his picks for touchdowns, he did rack up 80 return yards. He took the ball away in five games, posting two interceptions in his second collegiate game to help AU post a 27-20 win at Greensboro. Campbell finished with 22 total tackles (19 solo) with a sack and three passes defensed. He also blocked two PATs, one each against Greensboro and Ferrum.
