FOREST, Va. --- The competitive nature of ODAC men's lacrosse took on new meaning on Saturday afternoon as league officials determined the seven-team field for the upcoming ODAC Men's Lacrosse Championship.
One of the deepest uses of the sport's tiebreakers was needed to decipher the deadlock between Hampden-Sydney College, Randolph-Macon College, and Shenandoah University for the fourth, fifth, and sixth seeds. The differences between each position included hosting a quarterfinal game (#4), traveling for a quarterfinal (#5), and hosting the first round contest (#6).
H-SC, RMC, and SU did not play each other in ODAC play under the conference's unbalanced schedule format. That made the first tiebreaker step, head-to-head competition, unusable without at least one official league game between each. The next two general ODAC tiebreakers -- the five-point tiebreaker and top-down comparison, sequentially -- proved identical. Men's lacrosse features two sport-specific tiebreakers. The first -- goal-differential amongst the tied teams -- was again unusable due to each team not facing one another at least once. That left the second men's lacrosse step -- goal-differential against the #1 seed -- accountable for breaking the tie.
Washington and Lee University, the #1 seed after a 9-0 trek through the ODAC's schedule, defeated each of the tied programs. The Generals topped the Tigers, 11-10, the Yellow Jackets, 13-11, and the Hornets, 18-8. Hampden-Sydney owns the #4 seed with a minus-1 goal differential against WLU, while Randolph-Macon holds the #5 seed with a minus-2 differential. Shenandoah plays as the sixth seed with a minus-10 differential.
The University of Lynchburg joins Washington and Lee with byes through to the semifinals in the ODAC's seven-team bracket. Roanoke College occupies the third seed and will host a quarterfinal along with H-SC. Guilford College secured its tournament berth with a 16-7 triumph over Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday.
Play begins right away with the first round contest hosted by Shenandoah on Sunday afternoon. The quarterfinals are slated for Tuesday, April 30 at the third and fourth seeds, while semifinals will be played at the first and second seeds on Thursday, May 2. The remaining two teams will play for the title at the highest seed on Saturday, May 4.
