ODAC Baseball Report: Week 6

ODAC teams enjoyed their busiest week of the season with 29 games played over the previous seven days. That included 14 conference outings. Shenandoah went 3-0 in league action featuring a road sweep of Virginia Wesleyan. Averett continued its best start since 2013, improving to 11-3 with a sweep over Washington and Lee to mark the Cougars first wins over the Generals since 2017. Lynchburg picked up a road sweep over EMU, while Randolph-Macon held serve at home with two victories over Roanoke. Hampden-Sydney took two games at Guilford along with a midweek home win over Ferrum to join SU at 3-0.

Lynchburg and Averett stand atop the ODAC standings at 4-0 while SU (4-1) and RMC (4-2) have also won four games. Five ODAC teams have reached double figures in overall victories led by Lynchburg's 15-2 record. Eight of the league's 12 teams have .500 or better records.

    Lewis, a first-year southpaw from Crewe, Va., put together one of the best pitching performances in Hampden-Sydney history in the second of his two appearances in Tiger victories on the way to his first career ODAC weekly honor. Lewis opened his week with two innings of nearly blemish free relief with three strikeouts and a walk in a no-decision in a 10-2 win over St. Mary's (Md.). Three days later, Lewis went the distance in a 3-1 win over Guilford, fanning 15 Quakers for one of the 10-best strikeout outputs in league history. He allowed one run on six hits with one walk to go along with his 15 punchouts. He struck-out the side in both the sixth and eighth innings – accounting for six of his 12 swinging K's – and had two strikeouts each in the first, second and ninth innings with his other strikeouts in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, respectively. For the season, Lewis is 1-0 in seven appearances including three starts. He has given up 13 runs on 22 hits with nine walks and 32 strikeouts in 24.2 innings of work.

    Jones, a junior second baseman from Durham, N.C., reached base at least twice in each of Lynchburg's four games last week and found his way to the basepaths 14 times in 18 plate appearances to help the nationally fourth-ranked Hornets to a 3-1 week on the way to his first ODAC weekly award of the season. Jones went 7-for-11 with six walks and a HBP, two doubles, a triple, a homer, six RBI, four runs scored, and five stolen bases. In Lynchburg's only blemish of the week – a 6-5 loss at Greensboro – Jones went 3-for-3 and was hit by a pitch. He doubled and tripled while driving in a run and scoring two bases. He hit a two-run shot and walked three times while driving in four and scoring twice himself in a 15-4 victory at Methodist. In an ODAC doubleheader sweep (2-1, 7-1) of EMU, Jones 3-for-5 with three walks, a double, an RBI, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. Jones was clean in the field on 16 total chances (13 assists) overall. For the season, Jones is hitting .380 with a 1.248 OPS.
