Ellis Twirls a Gem, Randolph-Macon Advances at NCAA Softball Championship

Yellow Jackets to Meet Virginia Wesleyan in Semifinals with Spot in Championship Series on the Line

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. --- Randolph-Macon College staved off elimination at the NCAA Division III Softball Championship for a second straight day as the Yellow Jackets saw All-American right-hander Gracie Ellis two-hit Rowan University in a 1-0 shutout on Saturday afternoon at Inspiration Field on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University.

Two ODAC teams are a part of the final four competitors remaining in the Division III bracket for the first time in league history. One squad is guaranteed a spot in the best-of-three championship series with Randolph-Macon (41-13) advancing to face Virginia Wesleyan University (48-3-1) in the semifinals on Sunday.

The Marlins have yet to lose in the double-elimination segment of the championship, affording them two chances to advance to the final series. The first game between RMC and VWU is slated for 12:00 p.m. ET on Sunday. If Randolph-Macon were to win that game, the two foes would then meet again at 5:00 p.m. ET that day for a winner-take-all showdown for a spot in the championship series.

Both starting pitchers on Saturday screamed for run support from their respective offenses. Ellis got that in the seventh inning with Randolph-Macon pushing across the game's only run. Second baseman Tori Powell led off with a sharp single through the left side of the infield. Ellis sacrificed her to second. Two batters later and with two down, centerfielder Amanda Lanyon dropped a single in front of her counterpart, scoring Powell with the throw home cut off for a 1-0 RMC advantage.

Ellis, who kept Rowan (49-4) off-balance all day, had a brief blip in the bottom of the seventh inning when she gave up a lead-off double to left-center to shortstop Payton MacNair. But a sacrifice bunt and a foul-fly to left later, Ellis shut the door with her seventh strikeout to end the game with the Profs lone runner to reach third stranded.

Ellis, now 28-5, was perfect until the sixth inning on the way to her 15th shutout and 27th complete game of the season. She hit left field Abigail Pawlowski to lead-off the frame, marking Rowan's first runner of the contest. The Profs nearly made the situation dangerous for RMC on two occasions, but both times Lanyon came up with excellent diving (first time) and sliding (second time) catches to keep additional runners off base.

Rowan's first hit came in the sixth inning with two down. The latter of those first two outs was another outstanding outfield catch, this time by left fielder Jacy Ramos diving to her right in foul territory. Second baseman Liz McCaffery followed with a bloop single to center that even Lanyon could not get to. After McCaffery stole second, the inning ended with a liner in the path of Ramos in left.

Lanyon led RMC's offense with two hits, while third baseman Charlotte Boswell, designated player Naomi Sadler, and Powell had one each.

Rylee Lutz took the loss for Rowan despite her strong effort. She allowed one run on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. She closes the season 22-2.
