ODAC Women's Basketball Report: Week 9

The holiday season was very strong for ODAC women's basketball with teams going 12-5 over 17 games (plus one exhibition). Nationally eighth-ranked Washington and Lee and Guilford are both 11-0 as two of nine unbeaten programs remaining in Division III. Both are 2-0 in ODAC play along with Shenandoah (10-1), which joins WLU in the D3hoops.com top-25 as the 24th-ranked team in the country. Bridgewater (9-2) is receiving votes towards that survey and joins GC, SU, WLU and Randolph-Macon (8-3) at 2-0 in conference games. All 12 of the ODAC's squads have won at least four games with .400 or better winning percentages. Ten units have .500 or better records.

  • BRIAHNA SCOTT | GUILFORD | GUARD/FORWARD
    Scott, a junior from Graham, N.C., put together a strong all-around week to help Guilford improve upon the program's best start with two wins at the Springhill Suites Guilford Holiday Classic to put the Quakers' at 11-0. Guilford is one of nine unbeaten programs remaining in Division III, tying with Washington and Lee University among other schools with the sixth-most wins in the country. Scott averaged 16.5 points and 5.0 rebounds while registering 15 assists, 14 steals, and four blocked shots over the Quakers' two outings. She opened with 17 points and four boards in an 88-71 win over St. Mary's (Md.). She dished out nine assists and came away with five steals to go with a pair of blocked shots. In the second game of the classic, Scott registered nine steals in GC's 73-64 win over Piedmont University to match the most of the ODAC this season (w/ teammate Julianna Walter) and tie for the ninth-most in a game in the country. Scott added 16 points and six rebounds (4 defensive) with six assists and two blocked shots. For the season, Scott is averaging 14.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. She leads the ODAC in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9) and ranks third in assists (41), assists per game (3.7), steals (30), and steals per game (2.7), fourth in blocked shots (14) and blocked shots per game (1.3), and 10th in foul shooting (.765; 39-of-51).

  • QUINN McGUINNESS | WASHINGTON AND LEE | GUARD
    McGuinness, a senior from Columbia, N.J., was an offensive force in helping Washington and Lee take down Emory University in a clash of nationally top-10 ranked teams. The Generals, ranked seventh in the country by the WBCA and eighth by D3hoops.com, are now 11-0 and one of nine unbeaten teams remaining in Division III. That is list the Generals helped pare down with their victory over the No. 8/7 ranked Eagles. McGuinness posted a game- and career-high 25 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field including 4-of-5 from downtown. She was also 7-of-10 from the stripe and pulled down four rebounds with three assists and two steals. McGuinness's three assists turned into seven points, giving her a direct impact on 32 of the Generals' 68 markers (47.1%). For the season, McGuinness is averaging 11.5 points per game with 28 assists and 14 steals.

    • Bridgewater guard Riley Corcoran averaged 14.5 points and 4.5 rebounds with 3 assists and 5 steals in the Eagles' 2-0 showing. Post Jaiden Polston averaged 13.0 points and 10.0 rebounds with 6 assists, 9 steals, and 2 blocked shots including a double-double (15 points, 14 boards) in a 61-50 win over Marymount (Va.).
    • Hollins posted Gracie Huffard averaged 9.5 points and 10.0 rebounds with 7 assists, 6 steals, and 4 blocked shots to help HU outscore Hood and Mary Baldwin a combined 165-54. Forward Jacorra Russell averaged 19.0 points and 4.0 rebounds with 3 assists, 5 steals, and 3 blocked shots.
    • Lynchburg guard Brooke Cason went 7-for-11 from 3-point range in the Hornets' 84-80 loss to Johnson & Wales (N.C.), tying the second-most made from deep in program history.
    • Randolph-Macon forward McKenzie Matheny posted the 6th double-double in her last 7 games with 18 points and 17 boards with 2 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocked shots in the Yellow Jackets 67-55 loss at Arcadia.
    • Roanoke guard Ashley Fowler averaged 17.0 points and 7.7 rebounds with 4 assists and 5 steals in the Maroons' 2-1 showing. Fowler was named to the Susan Dunagan Classic All-Tournament Team.
    • Shenandoah's tandem of Emily Williams and Addisyn Banks both scored 12 points in the Hornets 58-42 win over DeSales University with Williams notching a season-high 16 boards with 4 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocked shots. Banks added seven boards, 3 assists, 5 steals, and 2 blocked shots.
    • Virginia Wesleyan forward Brianna Long averaged 20 points and 14.0 rebounds with 6 steals and 3 blocked shots in the Marlins' 2-0 showing. She had 14 boards in both outings, going for 21 and 19 points, respectively, against Meredith and Stockton.
    • Washington and Lee forward Mary Schleusner posted 15 points and 21 rebounds (14 defensive) with 2 assists, 3 steals, and 4 blocked shots in the Generals' 68-63 triumph over No. 7/8 Emory University. Schleusner 1,627 career rebounds, leaving her just 84 shy of former Denison University standout Jordan Holmes' Division III record of 1,711.
