ODAC Men's Volleyball Report: Week 9

It was a mixed week of action for ODAC programs with 21 total matches on the docket including nine league outings. Randolph-Macon, which just may crack into the AVCA top-20 this week, highlights both segments of play as the Yellow Jackets are now 7-0 in conference play and 19-3 overall with a showcase 3-0 triumph over reigning national champion and ninth-ranked Southern Virginia this week. Roanoke is 7-1 in league matches and 13-5 overall, while Virginia Wesleyan is now 5-3 in ODAC contests and 16-4 overall. Lynchburg joins VWU at 5-3 in conference outings and is currently 8-8 overall, making the Hornets one of five ODAC programs at .500 or better overall.

  • BRYCE MATTHEWS | RANDOLPH-MACON | OUTSIDE
    Matthews, a junior from Chesterfield, Va., played in four of Randolph-Macon's five matches last week, helping the Yellow Jackets to 4-0 mark in those outings and a 5-0 showing overall. That effort included a pair of ODAC victories and a showcase 3-0 triumph over defending national champion and current ninth-ranked Southern Virginia University. Matthews posted 14 total blocks and 14 digs over the quartet of 3-0 victories while also contributing 37 kills at a .385 clip on offense. In a 3-0 win at Marymount University on Tuesday, Matthews registered three block assists and five digs long with five kills. He then posted three most block assists and a pair of digs along with seven blemish-free kills in a 3-0 win at Averett on Wednesday evening. RMC defeated AU twice that night with Matthews not playing in the latter of the two outings. On Saturday in a 3-0 victory at Bridgewater in the first of two matches, Matthews went for four block assists and a dig with eight kills at a .389 clip. He turned up the production in the day's second match against SVU, registering a career-high 21.5 points with four total blocks including three solos and 17 kills to go with six digs.

  • JOSHUA DAVIS | LYNCHBURG | OUTSIDE
    Davis, a junior from San Diego, Calif., was the model of consistently strong offensive production with no fewer than 14 kills and no lower than a .241 attack percentage in helping Lynchburg post a 4-1 week that included a 3-1 showing in ODAC matches. In a 3-0 loss to Roanoke on Wednesday, Davis set a program-record for kills in a three-set match with 15 and hit .375 for the match. He added four digs and a block assist. In a pair of 3-1 ODAC wins over Shenandoah on Friday, Davis combined for 33 kills on 71 swings to go with an ace and 11 digs. On Sunday in a 3-1 conference win over Averett, Davis went for 16 kills on a .241 attack percentage with three aces and five digs. In the day's second match, a 3-0 win over Regent, he registered 14 kills on just 19 swings towards a .526 attack percentage. He added three aces and three digs.
