ODAC Baseball Report: Week 9

ODAC teams took part in 26 games over the past week including 13 league outings. Both sets of Hornets continued their lengthy winning streaks with nationally second-ranked Lynchburg improving to 24-3-1 by extending its winning streak to 16 straight games with four more wins last week and No. 5 Shenandoah moving to league-best 28-4 with a pair of victories to run its string to nine consecutive wins. Lynchburg's run is tied for the third-longest active streak in Division III. Ninth-ranked Bridgewater is also over 20 wins at 26-6 and is one of three ODAC teams with three-game winning streaks with Washington and Lee (17-9-1) and Hampden-Sydney (15-16). Lynchburg has created a bit of separation in the ODAC table at 12-0-1 in conference games. SU is second at 11-4.

  • STERLING AUSTIN | HAMPDEN-SYDNEY | SP
    Austin, a senior from Petersburg, Va., is in the ODAC weekly awards circle for a second time this season after toeing the rubber twice and registering 11 scoreless innings overall. His first outing was in relief on Wednesday in the Tigers' 14-6 win over Greensboro. He worked the sixth and seventh innings and faced seven batters, allowing one hit and fanning four. On Saturday, Austin took the ball from the start and tossed a nine-inning shutout in Hampden-Sydney's 7-0 triumph over Roanoke. He scattered six hits and walked a pair while returning seven Maroons back to the dugout via strikeout. He tired the side in order in the first, third, fourth, and fifth innings with the latter stretch featuring 12 straight batters retired. He threw 112 pitches in a tidy effort that included 12 fly-ball outs. For the season, Austin is 2-2 with a 6.07 ERA with 40 strikeouts over 46.0 innings of work.

  • QUINN MADDEN | LYNCHBURG | CENTER FIELD
    Madden, a graduate student from Burke, Va., collects his second ODAC weekly award of the season after blistering at the dish in nationally second-ranked Lynchburg's 4-0 week that extended the Hornets' winning streak to 16 straight games. Madden went 12-for-15 (.800) with a 1.983 OPS powered by two doubles and a homer. He walked four times, was hit by a pitch, drove in eight runs, scored 12 times, and stole a pair of bases. In a 17-5 win at Hampden-Sydney on Tuesday, Madden went 3-for-4 with a pair of walks. He drove in a run and scored four times. In a 16-2 triumph at 13th-ranked Christopher Newport, Madden went 2-for-4 with a walk and a steal. He again drove in one run and crossed the plate three times. In an ODAC series sweep (12-0, 14-4) over Averett, Madden went a combined 7-for-7 with a walk and a HBP. He doubled, homered, and stole a base in game one with three RBI and four runs scored. In game two, he crossed the dish five times with three more RBI and a double. For the season, Madden is hitting .385 with a 1.085 OPS. He has doubled eight times with a triple, seven homers, and 36 RBI.
