ODAC Men's Tennis Tournament Field Set

Generals Return to Top Spot, Reigning Champ Averett Involved in One of Two Three-Way Ties

FOREST, Va. --- Washington and Lee University ran its streak of unbeaten conference seasons to eight straight with an 8-0 mark to claim the ODAC regular season crown and top seed in the upcoming ODAC Men's Tennis Tournament.

Three ties dominated the eight-team field with just the Generals (9-10 overall, 8-0 ODAC) and eighth-seeded Roanoke College (6-11, 3-5) free from the league's tiebreaking procedures. The two squads will meet in the quarterfinals in Lexington. There were not one but two three-way ties in the final conference table, one of which included reigning ODAC champion Averett University.

The Cougars (8-7, 6-2) will play as third seed this season with their tie with Shenandoah University (12-5, 6-2) and Randolph College (12-4, 6-2) requiring pre-drawn lots to solve. Drawn lots is the ODAC's fourth step in its tiebreaking protocol. All three schools went 1-1 against each other, rendering head-to-head results moot. The same happened with the ODAC five-point tiebreaker and top-down comparison, both of which feature a common opponents function given the conference's unbalanced eight-match schedule. That left the pre-drawn numbers to set forth the remaining three quarterfinal hosts.

Shenandoah will play as the second seed with AU as the third seed and the WildCats in fourth position.

The second three-way deadlock was much easier to solve with head-to-head competition sifting through a 4-4 stalemate with Hampden-Sydney College, University of Lynchburg, and Virginia Wesleyan University. The Marlins (10-9, 4-4) beat both schools during ODAC play, awarding them the fifth seed and a quarterfinal date at Randolph on Tuesday. The Hornets (8-8, 4-4) defeated the Tigers (8-10, 4-4) on Saturday, making them 1-1 in the three-way rotation. Lynchburg will play from the sixth position and travel to Averett to open the tournament. H-SC makes its way to Shenandoah for a Tuesday date in Winchester.

Once the quarterfinals are completed, the four remaining schools will travel to Washington and Lee for semifinal and possible championship matches on Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3.
