INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- While one set of tennis Generals heads south, the other prepares to travel north with Washington and Lee University's men's outfit set to open play in Pennsylvania following an announcement of the Division III Men's Tennis Championship team bracket on Monday afternoon.
Nationally 43rd-ranked Washington and Lee earned its spot in the field after claiming its 43rd ODAC men's tennis trophy on Sunday. They now join a five-team pod at Swarthmore College this weekend.
The bracket again features 44 teams with the allotment of automatic qualifiers as conference champions increasing by one to 35 qualifiers. The remaining nine programs were selected at-large by the Division III Men's Tennis Championship Committee.
Washington and Lee (12-10) is located in the upper-right quadrant of the bracket. The Generals begin their tournament in the second round against Carnegie Mellon University. The Tartans (14-5) are an at-large pick out of the University Athletic Association (UAA). The host Garnet (20-6) also start play in round two. The Centennial Conference champion will meet the winner of Allegheny College and Penn State-Behrend, which meet in round one. The Gators (17-7) won the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) crown, while the Lions (18-4) claimed the Atlantic East Conference (AEC) championship.
Play in the early rounds of the championship are slated for a date window of May 7-10. The Swarthmore pod starts on Friday, May 8 and continues through Sunday, May 10. The remaining eight teams then head to Chattanooga, Tenn. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 19-20. After a day of rest, the remaining two squads will play for the national trophy on Friday, May 22. Each of the final seven matches will be played at the Champions Tennis Club.
Still to be announced are participants in the singles and doubles championships. Those are slated to be released on NCAA.com on Wednesday, May 6.
