ODAC Women's Tennis Report: Fall #1

Results from the ITA Regional Championships

The annual ITA Southeast Regional Women's Tennis Championships were hosted by the University of Mary Washington over the weekend. Several ODAC teams and athletes participated in a robust four-day competition that featured multiple entry draws for singles and doubles play with championship and consolation brackets for each flight. Below we break down each ODAC school's showing and recognize our first ODAC Singles Player of the Week and Doubles Team of the Week of the season.

Singles: the singles event featured four flights – Championship, Blue 1-3 – and an East (main) and West (consolation) bracket for each; there were additional brackets available in the “compass bracket” format, but they were unused; rounds of various lengths – 64 players, 32, 16, etc. – were included

Doubles: the doubles event included two flights for Championship and Blue play with each showcasing a main and consolation bracket

  • SARAH LADD / SUSANNA WHITEHEAD | WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY
    In just their second event as a doubles pairing, sophomore Sarah Ladd from Mobile, Ala., and first-year Susanna Whitehead from Richmond, Va., picked up two wins in the championship doubles bracket at the ITA Regional Championships over the weekend. They opened by edging Dickinson College's Jenna Crain and Anabel Romero Gemmell, 8-7 (6), before posting an 8-0 victory over Randolph College duo Sophia Cahue and Fleur Gaalman in the round of 32. They put up a strong fight in the round of 16, but ultimately fell against Carnegie Mellon University's Ahona Chowdhury and Maya Diyasheva, 8-6. The Tartans' tandem would go on to win the championship flight title.

  • ALLIE MURRELL | WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY
    After missing last season's ITA regional championship due to injury, Murrell put on a strong showing in Fredericksburg by making it to the round of 16 in the championship flight. As a 9-seed, the junior Florence, S.C. native cruised in the first round 6-0, 6-1 against Lily Ganjbaksh of St. Mary's (Md.), before grinding out a 6-7 (5), 7-5, 1-0 (7) win over Sarah Sandoval Banuelos of from host University of Mary Washington the next day in the round of 32. Murrell's run came to an end, however, in the round of 16, 6-2, 6-3, against top-seeded Sahana Madala of Johns Hopkins University, who would later go on to win the championship flight.
